- Meeting Overview:
The East Longmeadow Library Board meeting highlighted a notable rise in library patronage, driven by increased programming and strategic outreach efforts, as well as the launch of several innovative fundraising initiatives by the Friends of the Library. The meeting, attended by several board members and the Library Director, covered a range of topics, from programming success to upcoming community events.
Library Director Katie McGo reported a significant boost in library circulation, with over 14,120 items circulated in October, marking an increase of more than 5,000 from the previous month and over 1,300 from the previous year. This surge in activity was attributed to a combination of engaging programming across different departments and increased foot traffic due to early voting activities held in the library’s conference room. The children’s department alone conducted 49 programs, attracting a total of 1,131 attendees. A highlight was the chicks project, where five chicks hatched and were subsequently adopted, capturing the community’s interest.
The teen department also saw considerable engagement with 133 programs and a notable event—a zombie-themed party that included crafts, quizzes, and a makeup station. A partnership with a social worker from the Center for Human Development was established to facilitate a banned book club. The adult department recorded 17 programs with 23 attendees, and emphasized outreach efforts, including a visit to Bluebird Estates, resulting in 15 new patron registrations.
Technical Services expanded the library’s collection by adding 637 items and removing 595 in October. The department collaborated with the children’s department to improve access to early reader materials through reclassification. Staff development was prioritized, with training sessions on conflict management and de-escalation attended by library staff. A new event management system is under evaluation as a replacement for the discontinued Plymouth Rocket’s event keeper.
The Friends of the Library group presented a report on their activities, focusing on the successful celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week and ongoing fundraising efforts. Their Autumn basket raffle, which runs until November 2, is part of a broader strategy to engage the community. Additionally, the Friends are organizing a fundraiser associated with a Springfield Thunderbirds hockey game scheduled for March 16, with ticket sales benefiting the Friends. The Thunderbirds mascot, Boomer, will visit the library for a special storytime event on February 18, aimed at engaging children with various activities.
In a personnel update, the board acknowledged the retirement of a member who had served the library for many years. Expressions of gratitude were shared, highlighting the individual’s impact on the library community. Similarly, the Friends reported the resignation of Tom Witowski, a longstanding volunteer of over 34 years, whose dedication was recognized for its significant contribution to the library.
The board also discussed the upcoming local author event featuring Carol Monroe, who has booked the library’s meeting room for a private book signing. The board expressed pride in Monroe’s achievements as she embarks on her journey as a children’s author. It was clarified that this event would not be advertised by the library as it is a private booking.
