- Meeting Overview:
The East Longmeadow Library Board meeting on October 16 focused on two major initiatives: the adoption of a new social media policy and enhancements to the library’s adopted book program. The meeting, led by Vice Chair Amy Paul, also highlighted various library activities and community engagement efforts, emphasizing the library’s role as a hub for learning and cultural enrichment.
The most discussion centered around the library’s newly reviewed social media policy. This policy aims to support the library’s mission of promoting lifelong learning and cultural enrichment by utilizing various social media platforms, including Facebook, X, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. The policy delineates responsibilities, noting that while the library director oversees content, they may delegate tasks to staff members. The board underscored that social media would serve as a tool to inform patrons about library resources and programs. However, it was emphasized that the library does not assume parental responsibilities, placing the onus on guardians to monitor minors’ access to online content.
A critical component of the policy is its disclaimer regarding third-party content. The library clarified that such content does not reflect its official views. The policy also outlines what constitutes inappropriate content, including anything that promotes illegal activities or discrimination. The library reserves the right to restrict access for those who violate these guidelines. During the policy review, minor punctuation adjustments were suggested and accepted to enhance clarity.
Parallel to the social media policy, the board delved into the library’s adopted book program. This initiative allows patrons to contribute funds towards books pre-selected by library staff, simplifying the donation process. The program was designed to provide patrons with options, allowing them to support the library even if specific requests cannot be accommodated. Patrons can choose from quarterly book selections. This approach streamlines donations and addresses previous challenges with accommodating specific book requests.
The meeting also covered the library’s vibrant programming across different age groups. The children’s department reported 34 programs with 938 participants, including popular activities like scavenger hunts and outdoor storytime. The return of the chicks program, funded by the Friends of the East Longmeadow Public Library, was particularly well-received, drawing interest from numerous visitors. The teen department’s collaboration with the parks and recreation department on Friday afternoons was highlighted, alongside positive feedback for themed programs such as those centered on “Doctor Who.”
Adult programming saw ten events with 106 attendees, alongside significant engagement in reference transactions and study room use. However, unfulfilled requests for room usage prompted a discussion on improving the tracking system. The Adult Services Department continued its outreach efforts, notably hosting a successful hydrangea painting class in partnership with a new vendor. The library registered 48 new patrons and logged 87 volunteer shelving hours, while the door count reached 10,736 for the month.
The technical services department processed 883 new items and removed 274 from the collection. A hot spot was added due to high demand, and the adopted book program’s success was noted, with plans to pilot a quarterly order system. Staff members participated in professional development workshops, preparing for changes in ADA requirements and enhancing digital equity.
The board’s relationship with the Friends of the Library was another focal point, with plans to adopt a book in honor of the Friends group. “East Coasting: The Ultimate Road Trippers Guide to the Northeast” was chosen for dedication, celebrating the Friends’ support for library initiatives. A proposal for board members to attend Friends meetings on a rotation basis was discussed.
