- Meeting Overview:
The East Longmeadow School Committee’s June 17th, 2024 meeting highlighted progress in promoting student achievement and fostering an inclusive school environment. The committee members, whose specific contributions and presence were carefully noted, delved into multiple initiatives ranging from the implementation of mandatory breakfast programs to the success of diversity and equity policies. The meeting was particularly notable for its in-depth discussions on the academic performance of students in reading and math, the creation of an inclusive and supportive school culture, and the introduction of new programs aimed at boosting student success.
One focus of the meeting was the implementation of a mandatory breakfast program and the district’s new status as a community eligible provision (CEP) district, which will provide free meals to all students. Director of Food Services, Lorie Paul, elaborated on the logistics of the breakfast program and the benefits of becoming a CEP district, including the broader impact on services such as discounted busing and sports. Concerns were addressed regarding the verification process for the CEP and communication with families about new forms.
Another central point was the school’s efforts to support the whole child, with data presented on student survey responses relating to emotional regulation and engagement. The leadership team reported successes in reducing chronic absenteeism and in fostering a high participation rate in professional development days. Efforts to support teachers in using instructional materials effectively and in creating inclusive classroom spaces were also discussed.
Further discussions included the role of the Diversity and Equity Steering Committee in policy revision, recruitment, and retention efforts, with emphasis on the importance of creating a welcoming school environment for all. The presentation by Mr. Paige and Miss Blain highlighted the formation of an attendance team and its positive impact on attendance rates.
The Instructional Support and Leadership (ISL) program was another discussion point, with data indicating that 104 students in math and 68 in English had been identified for requiring additional support, resulting in plans to continue diagnosing and supporting these students. The committee also reviewed student performance in the i-Ready program for reading and math, noting specific goals for typical and stretch growth, and the steps taken to address areas where goals fell short.
Recruitment and retention strategies were discussed with the aim of creating an attractive and comfortable climate within the school system. Efforts to improve student attendance and academic performance were also emphasized, alongside the use of various assessment tools to track student progress.
The committee addressed the school’s progress in analyzing student data to identify students likely to succeed in algebra and highlighted an increase in the percentage of students projected to be proficient in math. Additionally, they discussed academic coaching cycles, mastery checks for tier one instruction, and the implementation of an enrichment class for students who tested out of i-Ready.
An inclusive and supportive school culture was depicted by sharing the results of Panorama surveys. Professional development provided by the Academic Leadership Association was introduced to improve teacher-student relationships.
The committee expressed satisfaction with the progress in various areas, acknowledging further improvements needed in student engagement and inclusive practices. They discussed the positive feedback from teachers on a support program delivered by coaches and the expansion of mentorship and mental health supports for students.
The meeting also touched on the school’s mission statement and efforts to instill a sense of community and positive feelings among students. The success of student outreach programs and the decrease in chronic absenteeism from 22.5% to 2.9% were highlighted.
