- Meeting Overview:
The East Windsor School Board meeting focused on issues such as increasing incidents of violence and substance abuse in schools, the introduction of a new assistant principal, and the recognition of long-serving employees. The board also discussed initiatives aimed at improving school safety and climate, alongside the celebration of staff members who have dedicated 25 years to the district.
A key topic of discussion was the report on the Student Safety Data System (SSDS), revealing an uptick in incidents of violence and vandalism at Hightstown High School and KPS Middle School during the latter half of the previous school year. The report, presented by the district’s anti-bullying coordinator, highlighted the need for consistent disciplinary measures and the implementation of restorative practices across the district. Notably, the report excluded vaping-related incidents from substance offense statistics, though it was mentioned that 21 such incidents occurred at the high school and 16 at CPS Middle School. These figures underscore a trend of escalating conflicts as the academic year progresses, prompting the district to enhance its safety protocols.
To address these safety concerns, the district is implementing several proactive measures. These include the introduction of the Navigate 360 platform, which integrates social-emotional learning and character education modules, and the use of student mediation to resolve conflicts. Additionally, the district has increased counseling staff at the middle school and installed vape sensors to curb substance use. The sensors, designed to detect vaping in school bathrooms, have been operational, with alerts sent to administrators who monitor footage to identify students involved. While the sensors are still under evaluation for effectiveness, their presence serves as a deterrent against vaping.
In conjunction with these safety efforts, the board discussed the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights (ABR) self-assessment, which evaluates the district’s anti-bullying programs and overall school climate. Building teams conducted self-assessments, resulting in a slight improvement in scores. The assessment aims to identify strengths and areas for improvement, guiding future updates to the district’s safety plans. The board also emphasized the importance of the “Stop It” tool, an anonymous reporting system for students to report bullying or conflicts, though it was noted that awareness of this tool among students needs improvement.
The meeting also celebrated employees who reached 25 years of service in the district, acknowledging their contributions to the educational community. Among those honored was a science teacher who, since returning to Hightstown High School in 1999, has served as a student council adviser and taught AP Biology, inspiring countless students to pursue careers in science. Other honorees included long-serving educators and staff from various departments, each recognized for their dedication and impact on students and colleagues alike.
In further personnel news, the board announced the appointment of Miss Gretchen Ciso as the new assistant principal for Melvin H. Creps Middle School.
The superintendent’s report rounded off the meeting by highlighting a successful professional development day for educators, featuring a motivational keynote speaker who emphasized the positive influence of teachers. Additionally, the report mentioned a resource fair for parents of special education students, which facilitated essential connections between parents and service providers.
As the meeting concluded, board members discussed various topics, including the need for clearer communication about committee roles and responsibilities. A call was made to address curriculum committee notes at the next meeting, with a focus on graduation requirements and Advanced Placement courses, reflecting ongoing efforts to refine educational offerings and governance processes.
