Reflecting on the previous year, the Superintendent expressed pride in achievements such as the inclusive Assistant Principal interview process and the city leadership academy presentation, which informed city council members about the school community and budgeting process. A survey aimed at transforming the middle school experience received 122 responses, with plans to relaunch in November to boost participation. The district’s equity committee continues to analyze student belonging, guided by stakeholder feedback.

The meeting also addressed the district wellness policy, which had not been revised since 2013. The newly revised policy focuses on the whole child, encompassing mental health alongside physical wellness and nutrition. The district wellness committee played a role in aligning the policy with community values regarding equity and shared responsibility. The revised policy, now eight pages long, addresses components such as food access, nutrition education, and staff wellness, with an emphasis on equity concerning fundraisers and food choices in schools.

Additionally, the committee considered updates from various subcommittees, including the policy subcommittee, which plans to meet weekly to discuss and update policies. The subcommittee discussed the restraint and seclusion policy, emphasizing the need for community input, especially from parents of students in special education. Minor changes to the school choice policy and a policy defining parent advisory councils are expected to be presented at the next meeting.
