Edina School Board Approves Superintendent’s Early Exit Amid Leadership Transition
- Meeting Overview:
The Edina School Board has approved a mutual termination agreement with Superintendent Dr. Stacy Stanley, effective April 18th, to facilitate her transition to a new role at St. Paul Public Schools.
During the recent board meeting, Vice Chair Erica Allenburg clarified that the term “termination” in the agreement was purely procedural, allowing Dr. Stanley to leave her current contract early. It was confirmed that discussions with legal counsel have addressed the transition, focusing on accountability mechanisms and logistical planning to avoid disruptions.
The timeline for hiring an interim superintendent was also discussed, with concerns raised about ensuring sufficient time for a handover. The board is constrained by open meeting laws, which limit collective discussions, but emphasized the importance of transparency and communication in this critical decision. The board is moving forward with the search process, with job descriptions and leadership profiles to be posted, and applications open until February 21st. Community involvement is encouraged throughout the process, with updates available on the district’s website.
In addition to the leadership transition, the board engaged in several other discussions. One of the topics was the comprehensive literacy plan, presented by the Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning, which highlighted developments since the last curriculum adoption in 2016. The literacy plan emphasizes a shift in pedagogical approaches, incorporating the science of reading and lessons learned during the pandemic. The board approved the Benchmark Advance and Benchmark Adelante programs for reading and writing instruction, selected after a year-long review involving staff feedback. These programs are designed to provide systematic phonics instruction and knowledge-building across science, social studies, and literature for grades K-5.
Board members expressed confidence in the curriculum’s alignment with Minnesota Department of Education standards, despite concerns about potential approval challenges. The program’s scaffolding features and rigorous writing expectations have been well received by early implementers.
The meeting also addressed the development of academic calendars for 2026-2027 and 2027-2028, presented by the Assistant Superintendent and Executive Director of Human Resources. The proposed calendars aim to maximize instructional time while accommodating necessary breaks and professional development. Notably, the calendars are aligned with cultural observances and community preferences, featuring breaks for Thanksgiving, winter, and spring, and aligning with Jewish holidays. These calendars are set for further consideration in March, amid discussions with Parent Teacher Organizations.
During policy reviews, several updates were proposed to align district policies with federal and state laws, best practices, and community needs. Notable changes included revisions to policies on electronic technologies use, summer school instruction, student promotion, and class size. The board emphasized the importance of these updates in promoting educational equity and transparency.
In action items, the board unanimously approved a collective bargaining agreement with Service Employees International Union Local 284 for building grounds and maintenance employees. The agreement includes wage increases, health insurance adjustments, and changes to vacation accrual, reflecting collaborative negotiations aimed at reducing staff turnover.
The meeting concluded with updates from Dr. Stanley, who announced a community task force to enhance educational programs and a successful grant application for electric buses.
