- Meeting Overview:
Edison High School marked its 65th annual commencement ceremony with a celebration of student resilience and achievement, set against the backdrop of a global pandemic that has redefined the educational experience. The event was punctuated by inspirational speeches, vibrant musical performances, and a recognition of the staff, retirees, and the robust support of the Edison community.
The salutatorian, Eduardo Nunes, addressed the graduating class with a powerful message about the significance of authenticity and facing challenges head-on. He extended his gratitude to the Board of Education, teachers, and peers for their unwavering support. In a similar vein, the valedictorian, Atara Inadar, shared a compelling vision for the future, encouraging classmates to pursue their dreams with determination and to approach setbacks with a sense of humor.
Music infused the ceremony with a spirit of celebration. The Edison High School orchestra’s rendition of “Ry” by Claude Debussy provided a classical touch, while the Acella choir’s interpretation of “I Will Fly” by James E. Green III uplifted the audience. The Edison High School band also contributed to the festive atmosphere, performing at various points throughout the proceedings.
Adding to the event’s emotional weight, a spoken word performance by student Simone Banks delivered the poem “Immortality” by Rudy Francisco. This artistic expression contributed to the overarching theme of enduring impact and the legacy left by the graduates.
The president of the board, Mr. Biral Patel, offered congratulations to the Class of 2024 and inspired the graduates to think about how they could contribute to their alma mater in the future. The superintendent of schools, Dr. Edward Aldarelli, then presented the class to the Board of Education, remarking on the students’ resilience and accomplishments. Dr. Aldarelli also stressed the importance of maintaining one’s beliefs and voiced appreciation for the parents, family members, teachers, and staff who played roles in supporting the graduates’ journeys.
The formal certification of the graduates’ completion of all local and state requirements was a solemn and notable moment. The presentation of diplomas followed, with each student being acknowledged for their hard work and dedication to reaching this educational milestone.
The ceremony also included moments of personal reflection and gratitude. The principal shared a personal anecdote that underscored the importance of family and mentors, encouraging the graduates to hold onto the lessons and relationships that have shaped them. Additionally, the sports update by Alisa Onofre spotlighted the accomplishments of Edison High’s sports teams, celebrating the athletic prowess and teamwork that had been on display throughout the year.
Speeches from the student council president and the senior class president resonated with emotion and gratitude, as they recounted the graduates’ shared experiences, particularly the shift to virtual learning and the challenges it entailed.
The acknowledgments of various staff members and retirees underscored the collaborative effort that characterizes the educational process at Edison High School. It was a moment to honor those who have contributed to the institution’s success and to bid farewell to those moving on to new chapters in their lives.
