- Meeting Overview:
The Edison School Board convened for its first Board of Education Action meeting of 2024, during which Superintendent Edward Aldarelli presented the district’s goals and progress, particularly focusing on strategic planning and community engagement. The board also celebrated student achievements and addressed concerns regarding administrative support for extracurricular activities. Notably, the board discussed the implementation of a Universal pre-K program and the development of a long-term strategic plan, Vision 2030. The meeting was marked by public concerns over various issues, such as the support for special needs programs and the handling of snow days in the academic calendar.
He elaborated on the district’s successes, including the dual language program and the efforts to address school overcrowding. The superintendent also detailed the launch of a Parent University program and the intent to improve communication channels through social media and the district website. Aldarelli’s lighthearted remark about the presentation’s potential for criticism later in the evening hinted at the board’s culture of constructive feedback.
Rick Cohen, the Chief Academic Officer for secondary education, introduced an on-demand chat tutoring initiative provided through Varsity Tutors, which would offer free, 24/7 tutoring access. This service aims to alleviate the challenges of traditional tutoring methods. An information session was scheduled to further inform parents about this new resource.
Anjana Patel, a member of the School Board, previewed a one-page document or link designed to help parents and students navigate the district’s website. This initiative aims to provide easy access to various resources, with an invitation for community input to enhance its effectiveness.
The meeting also dedicated time to recognize numerous student achievements. Anjana Patel commended students for their success at the FCCLA fall leadership conference, and other recognitions included victories in sports and academic competitions for Edison High School and an award-winning co-curricular team at a marathon app challenge. The student winners at Woodrow Wilson Middle School’s volleyball team and cross country champions from John Adams Middle School were also acknowledged. A moment of silence was observed for Joe Listo, a recent deceased community member.
Public comments revealed several concerns. Elizabeth Conway raised a specific item within the personnel resolutions, urging board members to oppose it. Jerry brought up an unspecified issue related to the personnel resolutions as well. Student council representatives from Edison High School and John P. Stevens High School reported on their schools’ activities, with Edison High’s Charvey Pad Babini discussing the need for improved safety in the senior parking lot.
Superintendent Aldarelli and board members Brian Rivera, Virginia White, and Douglas Schneider acknowledged the retirees’ contributions and discussed the installation of GPS on school buses.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on challenges faced by the Model United Nations club at Edison High School. Trusta Patel, a student, spoke about the obstacles the club encountered, particularly with administrative support and outdated payment methods, which hampered their participation in national conferences. The board responded with a commitment to address these issues and ensure smoother processes for student activities in the future.
Public speakers also highlighted disparities in recognition between boys and girls basketball competitions, questioned the delay in forming school board committees, and criticized the suggestion to allocate subpar classrooms for special needs students. The potential for state withdrawal of funding for special needs programs due to such actions was also mentioned.
Additionally, the impact of potential snow days on the academic calendar was discussed, with a public request for a revised demographic study to be made available on the district’s website.
