Egg Harbor School Board Discusses Budget, Student Success, and New Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The Egg Harbor School Board meeting on February 9, 2025, focused on budgetary strategies, student achievements, and upcoming initiatives. The board explored financial aspects, such as the budget for the upcoming fiscal years and strategies to maintain low tax increases. Additionally, students and staff were recognized for their successes, and new programs were introduced to enhance educational experiences across the district.
The meeting’s top priority was the budget discussion, led by the business administrator, who outlined strategies to maintain low tax increases while supporting district operations. The presentation included potential tax increases for the fiscal years 2023-2024 and 2024-2025, attributed to an increase in ratables rather than direct tax hikes for the average taxpayer. The board aims to achieve a tax-neutral outcome or even a decrease as it approaches a target year for acquiring new debt. Three budget scenarios were presented: a flat rate, a tax-neutral scenario, and a 2% tax rate increase, each with different revenue implications. The preliminary budget will be presented on March 18, with ongoing discussions by the finance committee.
The administrator detailed the budget’s allocation, with salaries and benefits comprising a portion, estimated at 82% of a $95 million budget. The potential reduction in IDEA funding, which could shift related expenses into the general fund, and anticipated insurance increases were also noted as challenges. The board is committed to maintaining current programs while managing an 8% reduction from each school and department. Public presentations regarding these financial strategies are planned for the fall.
The meeting also celebrated student achievements, such as the high school’s A Cappella group securing second place at the 2025 Mid-Atlantic quarterfinals under the direction of Mr. Tensley. Junior Sophia Luongo received the award for Outstanding Soloist. Additionally, the Future Business Leaders of America Club and the Key Club are organizing upcoming competitions to engage students in extracurricular activities.
The superintendent emphasized continuous improvement and the importance of partnerships and grants to sustain these initiatives.
Principals from different schools shared updates on their accomplishments and future goals. Notable improvements included upgrades to the Large Group Instruction space and the installation of Rise Vision TVs at Alder Avenue Middle School. Fernwood Avenue Middle School introduced academic support initiatives and mental health solutions, while Egg Harbor Township High School enhanced its media center, auditorium, and outdoor facilities. The director of Athletics and Activities discussed updates to sports facilities and plans to replace outdated equipment.
Dr. Lindsay Selski, director of alternative education at Eagle Academy, highlighted unique programs such as a school economy system, life skills programs, and community partnerships to enhance student participation and behavior. The board also acknowledged the importance of character education, diversity initiatives, and professional development opportunities for educators.
The meeting addressed transportation needs, noting a shortage of bus drivers to manage the extensive bus routes. The district’s safety measures, including unarmed and armed guards, were discussed to ensure student security during school activities.
The board engaged in a review of operational and academic statistics, highlighting the district’s continuous assessment and improvement processes. Enrollment figures and special education services were discussed.
