Egg Harbor School Board Meeting Highlights Facility Challenges and Security Enhancements
- Meeting Overview:
The Egg Harbor School Board meeting focused on issues affecting the district, including aging infrastructure, security upgrades, and technological advancements.
A primary topic was the need for maintenance and upgrades to several school facilities. The facilities director highlighted ongoing challenges with aging infrastructure, such as underground drainage issues and HVAC systems nearing the end of their life cycles. Problems were noted in several buildings, including Alder and Fernwood, where underground piping is experiencing ongoing failures. Additionally, the high school fire doors, many of which are over 40 years old, require replacement due to wear and tear from daily student use. Parking lots also need upgrades and expansion, as they were originally designed decades ago when the student population was smaller.
Security was another major focus, with the security director outlining the district’s current protection strategies and future plans. The district employs 29 security officers, including both armed and unarmed personnel, and has implemented a range of safety measures, such as a key access system, emergency communication protocols, and state-of-the-art camera systems. A notable achievement is the completion of the CRG mapping initiative, which enhances crisis response capabilities. The district is also increasing the number of school safety specialists with the goal of having one in every school and is implementing a “Stop the Bleed” program to improve emergency readiness.
The director of information technology updated the board on ongoing technological improvements, including the expansion of Wi-Fi access points to support the increasing use of wireless devices in schools. The district is upgrading its wide area network to ensure redundancy and is continuing its take-home device program, distributing Chromebooks to incoming 9th graders. Cybersecurity remains a priority, with budget allocations for enhanced monitoring services.
Other topics included transportation updates, with emphasis on addressing driver shortages and routine fleet replacements, and the extended enrichment program, which plans to increase enrollment and improve staff capacity. The food service director announced plans to expand pre-kindergarten services and confirmed that free breakfast would continue for all students districtwide, with no increase in lunch prices.
