Elmwood Park Council Honors Community Achievements Amidst Concerns Over Library Management
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Elmwood Park Borough Council meeting, community achievements were celebrated with recognitions for local soccer teams, police officers, and community leaders, while concerns were raised regarding the management of the Elmwood Park Public Library and public safety issues.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to recognizing the accomplishments of the EP Crew soccer teams. The U11 Lizards, U12 Wolfpack, and U15 Eagles were honored for their championship victories in the Morris County Youth Soccer Association. The teams were lauded for their impressive performances, with the U11 Lizards scoring 52 goals and conceding just 16, the U12 Wolfpack remaining undefeated with 49 goals and seven conceded, and the U15 Eagles scoring 47 goals while conceding only four. Players, coaches, and parents were acknowledged for their dedication, and trophies were distributed to the young athletes.
The council also took the opportunity to honor individuals in recognition of Black History Month and Women’s History Month. Highlighted was Detective Bernardet Griffith, the first African-American female officer and subsequent detective in the Elmwood Park Police Department. Her leadership in overseeing firearms training and the crossing guard program was noted, along with her commitment to personal growth as she pursues a bachelor’s degree. Officer Joe Pride was recognized for his valor, particularly his bravery in rescuing a family during a fire, earning him a valor award and induction into the New Jersey Police Honor Legion. Other officers, including Jerel Harris, Kevin Wilin, and Christian Gil, were commended for their service and dedication to the community. Jeanie Fry Tag was celebrated for her decades-long contributions to the Elmwood Park community, including her involvement in local organizations and the board of education.
The meeting then addressed concerns about the Elmwood Park Public Library. Residents Monica Smith and Aaron Hughes raised issues regarding staffing and management practices, citing high employee turnover and a lack of personnel, including a director and children’s librarian. They attributed the turnover to cronyism and nepotism within the library’s board of trustees, which included family members. Hughes pointed out ongoing lawsuits related to employment issues and criticized the board’s micromanagement, which he argued led to reduced services and a negative work environment. The council responded by acknowledging the concerns and expressed a commitment to address the issues with the mayor.
Public safety concerns were also highlighted during the meeting, with residents expressing the need for better safety measures for e-bike riders and improved enforcement of traffic rules. These issues were brought to light following a tragic e-bike accident in a neighboring town. One resident described the boulevard as unsafe for children riding e-bikes due to reckless driving by motorists.
In addition to these topics, the council discussed infrastructural issues, including amendments to ordinances related to sidewalk snow removal and parking restrictions. Ordinance 26-10 was introduced to amend penalties for sidewalk snow removal violations, allowing the building department to enforce the ordinance and relieve the police and Department of Public Works during snow events. Other ordinances concerning the improvement of Garden Drive, dogs in parks, and parking restrictions on Route 4 were adopted unanimously.
Council members also provided updates on community events and initiatives, including a spring mini camp, the Elm Elite Basketball League, and an Easter egg hunt. The importance of ebike safety education for students was emphasized, alongside condolences for the passing of a service dog, highlighting the need for community support in finding a replacement for the veteran owner.
