Emerson Borough Council Commemorates Local Figures, Tackles Zoning and Salaries, and Champions Community Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting presided over by Mayor Danielle DiPaola, the Emerson Borough Council honored prominent local personalities, deliberated on a zoning change request and salary range amendments, and highlighted community initiatives. The council also addressed ongoing issues like municipal contracts and welcomed newly elected members.
The meeting began with two proclamations honoring Peter James Jackalo, a former councilman and World War II veteran, and Jane DJ, a retiring borough clerk, for their contributions to Emerson. Mayor DiPaola read the proclamations, underscoring Mr. Jackalo’s service to the community and the military, and praising Jane DJ’s 16 years of service. November 29th, 2023, was declared Jane DJ Day in recognition of her dedication and positive influence.
Among the financial matters, the council adopted a resolution approving the bill list for the borough. The council tabled a zoning change request to allow time for clarifications from the redevelopers’ attorney. The meeting also saw discussions on the municipal animal control services contract for the upcoming year and a bloodborne pathogen program agreement with the Bergen County Department of Health Services.
The council introduced an ordinance to amend salary ranges, wages, and other terms of employment for certain borough employees for 2023. Councilwoman Jill McGuire commended the Veterans Day ceremony and congratulated Council President Michael Timmerman on his re-election and Councilwoman Ashley Rice on her election, sentiments echoed by Councilman Brian Gordon, who expressed his excitement to work with them.
The council acknowledged the election of Will Grolik and Amanda Ricardi to the Emerson Board of Education and expressed gratitude for the service of outgoing board members Anne Pressimone and Baru P. Pastor. The Emerson Junior Senior School was praised for receiving the AP Access Award for their outstanding performance in advanced placement courses.
Councilwoman Rice announced the return of the Deck the Homes Contest, encouraging homeowners to participate. The council president congratulated Councilman Timmerman and Councilwoman Rice on their respective re-election and election. Mayor DiPaola also thanked voters, expressed concern over voting machine issues in Emerson, and stressed the importance of voter turnout.
Community initiatives were spotlighted, with the Emerson Rotary Club announcing a food drive and the Emerson Police Department organizing its annual toy drive. The police department’s community policing unit raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by growing out their beards. Information was shared about the upcoming Christmas tree lighting ceremony, and the next meeting was scheduled for December 5th.
Roadwork activities and their coordination with school activities were discussed, leading to a decision to post tentative dates for roadwork on the borough’s Facebook page and website. The council also discussed a Department of Transportation grant for the Park Avenue phase two project and plans to enter a Cooperative program to reduce costs and expedite the process. The council updated residents on the installation of solar panels on the library roof and plans for a new building near the American Legion.
