- Meeting Overview:
In a shift in leadership, the Emerson School Board held elections for the positions of President and Vice President during their reorganization meeting on January 8th, 2024. Behrooz Pasdar was elected as the new President, while Amy Mara was appointed as Vice President. The meeting also saw the swearing-in of new board members and the approval of committee appointments.
The meeting commenced with the induction of new board members, with William GR and Amanda Ricardi taking the oath of office.
Following the swearing-in, nominations for board officers were solicited. Behrooz Pasdar was nominated and elected as the President of the Emerson School Board, with Amy Mara being elected as Vice President. Both motions for the elections of Pasdar and Mara were met with unanimous approval from the board members.
The meeting then transitioned to the approval of committee appointments. William Grolik was appointed as chair of the Facilities, Buildings, and Grounds Committee, with Amy Mara serving as a member. Behrooz Pasdar was named chair of the Finance and Negotiations Committee, with Keith Smith as a member. For the Curriculum, Instruction, and Student Achievement Committee, Amy Mara was appointed as chair, with Amanda Ricardi as a member. Additionally, Amy Mara was appointed as the board representative, with Behrooz Pasdar as alternate to the Bergen County and New Jersey School Board Association Legislative Committee.
The board unanimously adopted the consent agenda, which included various items reviewed prior to the meeting. They also reviewed and adopted the Code of Ethics, a traditional act meant to reaffirm the board’s commitment to ethical conduct.
Superintendent Phillip H. Nisonoff was present but provided no report other than leading the discussion on the Code of Ethics. The board members collectively read the code.
Public participation was invited for comments on agenda items, but no comments were recorded. The meeting was opened and closed to the public twice to allow for this interaction, though there appeared to be no public input.
The meeting concluded with personal statements from the newly elected board members expressing gratitude to the community, their families, and their colleagues. They emphasized their commitment to collaboration and the educational welfare of Emerson’s students.
