- Meeting Overview:
The Englewood City Council recently convened to discuss a range of issues, including the passing of respected community leader, Reverend Dr. Daniel Small Bailey, the establishment of a neighborhood preservation advisory committee, and a variety of local concerns such as traffic regulations, parking, and public safety.
In a tribute, council members approved a resolution honoring Reverend Dr. Daniel Small Bailey, who had served the community for over two decades. Members expressed their condolences and shared memories of Dr. Small Bailey’s contributions to the city. This recognition underscored the impact of his leadership and the void his passing has left in the Englewood community.
A key topic of debate was the proposed ordinance for the establishment of a neighborhood preservation advisory committee. Concerns were raised about the necessity and purpose of the committee, leading to a split vote where the ordinance failed to pass. Some council members suggested instead exploring the formation of a historic commission with legislative powers.
Traffic and safety issues also garnered the council’s attention, particularly regarding the use of electric scooters on sidewalks and the enforcement of traffic regulations. Additionally, the problem of bicycles being locked to trees and parking meters in the city was addressed.
The council discussed the upcoming Englewood Night Market, an event expected to attract attendees nationwide, with over 800 tickets sold. The Night Market will also serve as the venue for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the city’s first electric garbage truck, funded by a state grant. The Deputy city manager presented pictures of the truck.
Public safety was further emphasized with the swearing-in of seven new police officers. Englewood Police Department Chief Thomas Gley expressed his gratitude for the city’s support throughout the recruitment process. The new officers, whose biographies highlight diverse backgrounds and achievements, took their oaths of office, officially joining the city’s law enforcement team.
The community’s concerns were voiced in various forms during the meeting. Residents brought up issues such as the lack of handicap parking on Dean Street, with one citizen expressing frustration over the decision-making process regarding contractors. Another resident pointed out the sudden cessation of pothole repairs in Tributary Woods, raising questions about the city’s responsiveness to infrastructure maintenance.
The state of the city pool was another contentious topic, with residents questioning the management and transparency surrounding its maintenance and closure.
In a somber moment, the council observed a silence to honor a school principal who tragically passed away in South Africa. The council then addressed administrative matters, including entering a closed session to contemplate personnel matters, contract negotiations, and items under attorney-client privilege. This included the introduction of an ordinance authorizing a lease and a resolution to retain a municipal recruiting service for a Human Resources Director position.
They also moved to table specific resolution consent agenda items at the request of an individual during the public comment period and pulled two items for separate voting.
In administrative updates, the council welcomed a new Recreation director and highlighted the city employees’ participation in the mayor’s Zoom sessions.
