Englewood Police Department Celebrates Historic Accreditation Achievement
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Englewood City Council meeting, the Englewood Police Department received an accreditation award. This accomplishment is the result of a rigorous three-year effort to align with state best practices set by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. Chief of Police, along with Deputy Chief Del Roza and Lieutenant Rob Ouzi, played roles in this process, as highlighted in a commendation letter read during the meeting. Accreditation Program Director Harry Delgado emphasized the distinction’s importance, noting that a mere 54% of eligible agencies achieve accreditation. Following the presentation, the audience applauded as the certificate of accreditation was formally handed to the police department.
The meeting continued with a discussion on the Special Improvement District (SID) budget for the fiscal year 2027. The SID budget remained steady at $250,000, unchanged for over 14 years. A representative outlined plans to utilize $150,000 from capital reserves for the downtown common area street improvement program’s first phase, targeting completion by August. The SID’s executive director highlighted delays in receiving materials for benches and bike racks. The SID’s litter patrol, which operates along key areas of Palisade Avenue from Monday to Friday, was also discussed, with a focus on maintenance and addressing homelessness-related issues at bus stop enclosures.
Further elaboration on the SID’s initiatives included the growth of their social media presence, particularly their Instagram account, which serves to promote events citywide. This raised some debate among council members about the accessibility of social media for all community demographics. The discussion also touched on community engagement and improvement efforts, with a commitment to addressing storefront appearance and business occupancy concerns in the downtown area.
In other business, the council introduced Resolution 155, pertaining to the SID budget, with a public hearing scheduled for July 13. An ordinance amendment was also introduced to authorize street sweeping on West Palisade Avenue, with a public hearing set for June 23. The council addressed issues related to inadequate street cleaning and the improvement of public garage signage. Discussions included potential grants for facade enhancements, with a deadline for application in September.
Council members reviewed several resolutions, including the purchase of a 2027 Kenworth T480 conventional chassis and vacuum truck body for the Department of Public Works (DPW), costing a total of $375,519.30. Resolution 160 authorized a $181,828.64 contract for setting up a dispatch center, with concerns raised about potential additional fees for separate shipments. The council also approved roadwork and flood mitigation efforts on Spring Lane and redesigned a four-way intersection to improve safety and visibility.
Resolution 169 focused on environmental monitoring of underground storage tank areas near the DPW, while Resolution 170 commemorated Juneteenth in 2026. The council unanimously passed this resolution, acknowledging its historical significance and New Jersey’s early recognition of the holiday.
Financial matters were also on the agenda, including a significant payment related to the Garden State Municipal Payment, covering general insurance and workers’ compensation costs. Council members discussed ordinances related to the chaining of bicycles to city properties and announced several upcoming community events.
Public comments highlighted safety concerns regarding e-bikes and scooters on sidewalks, as well as dim street lighting on West Palisade Avenue. Residents also raised issues with a contractor’s work on Murray Avenue, prompting the council to pledge further investigation and oversight.
