- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Fair Haven Historic Preservation Commission, strides were made regarding the future of the Bicentennial Hall, alongside discussions on local business signage and updates from the Historic Association. The commission’s engagement with a professional planning group to create a strategic plan for Bicentennial Hall marked a development in the preservation and utilization of the historic building. This initiative, coupled with the approval of new business signage, emphasized the commission’s role in balancing the town’s historical integrity with its commercial vitality.
The most substantial item discussed was the proposal for a strategic or programmatic plan for Bicentennial Hall. A professional planning group offered planning and programmatic services to help devise a comprehensive strategy for the hall’s future use and preservation. The cost of the application fee would be covered by the Historic Association. The commission’s decision to move forward with the planning group’s services was seen as a step in safeguarding the historical significance of the hall while exploring potential functionalities to benefit the community at large.
In connection with the Bicentennial Hall, the commission addressed the Historic Association’s report about the Bicentennial Ball and the associated preservation efforts. The restoration of historic pews from the Chapel was a focal point, revealing a deep-seated respect for the town’s past. The commission considered various funding sources for the project, including local families and the Historic Association.
Additionally, the commission received an update on the Bicentennial Fall, including a request for a six-month extension on a grant, which was previously brought up at the council meeting. This extension was pertinent to the ongoing efforts to ensure ADA compliance at the hall, which the council had granted, with further updates anticipated.
In other business, the commission tackled the issue of signage for local enterprises. The lack of a quorum initially hindered the commission from voting on the 763 River Road Semolina Pasta Shop’s application for a temporary “now open” sign. Despite this setback, the commission suggested the shop owner revise their application to an informal one, facilitating a path forward for the business’s signage needs.
Moreover, the commission approved the application for exterior signage for a business on River Road. The new sign would be mounted on a post and include window signage facing the street. The commission also gave the green light to replacing old signs for another River Road business, endorsing the new signage as presented.
A report on the commission’s interaction with the Fair of Red Bank’s preservation commission revealed discussions about the differing levels of formality between the boards and the nature of issues they encounter.
