Fair Haven Discusses Market Expansion and Bicentennial Hall Restoration Grant
- Meeting Overview:
The Fair Haven Borough Council recently deliberated on community proposals, including the expansion of the Fair and Farmers Market into McCarter Park and a grant application for the restoration of Bicentennial Hall.
A focal point of the meeting was the proposal to expand the Fair and Farmers Market. Market representatives requested the use of McCarter Park to accommodate additional businesses that offer non-handable goods such as workout classes, reading, and yoga. This led to a comprehensive debate among council members regarding the introduction of fees for businesses using the park and the potential impact on both the park’s condition and local commerce. Questions were raised about the consistency of fees, the types of businesses permitted in the park, and the criteria for exceptions or waivers.
The discussion extended to the concern over setting a precedent by allowing businesses to operate in the park, potentially causing disruption. The issue of whether the businesses would profit from public space was also examined, alongside the importance of maintaining the park’s integrity. The council resolved to conduct further research and continue the discussion at the next meeting.
Another prominent topic was the grant application for Bicentennial Hall’s restoration. Council members deliberated the scope of work covered by the grant and the financial implications of hiring Colliers Engineering for the application process. A council member voiced apprehension, stating, “I would feel terrible if we approve the $5200 and then we get the grant, and then we would say we’re not going to front the $12,875.”
The council also considered the timing of the application, the feasibility of fulfilling the financial match, and the need for a Plan B contingency. They discussed breaking down the project into smaller components and exploring alternative funding sources.
Additionally, the council addressed a proposal from a representative of the Estuary art show. The representative requested the use of eight pews for an upcoming event, noting the potential for the art show to become an annual community highlight. Concerns were raised about safety, liability, and the impact on the building’s infrastructure, particularly in the context of serving alcohol during the event.
The potential relocation of the farmers market prompted discussions about the flexibility to pivot the event based on community feedback and the impact on local residents. The council examined the effects on traffic and resident concerns. Further, the meeting provided updates on facilities, including color options for a building and the replacement of a sewer pipe, and recognized a councilman for his careful attention to building improvements.
The introduction of ordinances to amend land use regulations and the approval of various consent agenda items, including a budget that resulted in a decrease in municipal taxes, were also addressed. Public comments included issues related to lighting and updates on upcoming community events.
