- Meeting Overview:
The Fair Haven Historic Preservation Commission recently convened to deliberate on several initiatives and proposals pertinent to the township’s heritage and historical preservation. Topping the agenda was the potential designation of Marter Pond as a Historic Landmark, a proposal that would not only recognize the historical significance of the local feature but also potentially impact the surrounding community and preservation practices.
During the meeting, the commission’s discussion underscored the significance of Marter Pond, with plans set in motion to investigate the process and repercussions of such a landmark designation. This initiative aligns with the commission’s broader goal of preserving the historical fabric of Fair Haven, as evidenced by their ongoing efforts to secure a landmark sign for Centennial Hall as a part of the Black Heritage Trail in New Jersey.
In addition to landmark designations, the commission is also looking ahead to the 2026 update of the town’s master plan. They suggested a review of the section that pertains to the Historic Preservation Commission’s role to ensure the continued protection and celebration of Fair Haven’s history. The commission members pondered an expansion of their advocacy to encompass the entire town, not just the historic district, offering guidance on historical matters to any interested community members.
The meeting also addressed the restoration of a property, with the commission debating historically accurate details such as shutters, roof design, window grills, and the use of a flat, minimal thatch pitched roof over the front porch. The commissioners were immersed in detail-oriented discussions regarding the roofing material, window configurations, porch construction, stair tower design, and driveway placement, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the historical accuracy and visual integrity of the property.
Notably, an application for a new construction project was presented by applicants Brett and Annette, who sought to demolish an existing structure and erect a new 3000 square foot home on Normandy Avenue. The applicants had conducted extensive research on the architectural details of other historic homes in the area and aimed to draw inspiration for their new home’s design. The commission engaged in a discussion about the historical accuracy and details of the proposed construction, scrutinizing aspects such as the type of roof material, siding, window configuration, and front porch material. The applicants were receptive to feedback from the commission, which was given with the intent of ensuring the new home would complement the historic aesthetic of the neighborhood.
Further discussions revolved around the renovation of a property at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Fair Haven Road. The commission touched on the timeline for completion of the ADA work and the process of securing funding for the project.
The meeting also set the stage for community events, including an upcoming garden party and the potential publication of a town-wide book detailing the local history, fostering a sense of communal pride and engagement with Fair Haven’s heritage.
