- Meeting Overview:
In a recent reorganization meeting, the Fair Haven Historic Preservation Commission tackled issues affecting the area’s historical integrity, focusing on property renovations and the preservation of local heritage. Highlighting the session, the Commission debated and approved an extensive renovation project for a historic property on Normandy Avenue. The meeting also touched on updates regarding the Batten Hall renovations, a stakeholder group’s involvement in the preservation of a historic school building, and the establishment of a house selection contest to promote preservation within the community.
The Commission’s discussion on the property on Normandy Avenue took center stage as they considered the owner’s application for replacing windows, siding, gutters, soffit, fascia, and roofing. Rebecca Padulla, the homeowner, accompanied by the builder Serge Brki, outlined their plans and provided details on the materials and construction methods proposed for the windows and doors. The Commission’s deliberation primarily revolved around the window grids, as they advocated for a traditional appearance with sticking on the outside of the glass. The cost implications of the preferred grid style were a concern for the property owner, given the scale of the project. Despite the initial debate, the Commission eventually approved the application, contingent on the use of the specified sticking for the windows.
After a debate, members agreed on smoother siding and asphalt shingle roofing to match the existing structure. The replacement of gutters was also approved without objections. The consensus reflects the Commission’s efforts to balance historical accuracy with modern practicalities and homeowner constraints.
The Commission expects future reports from this group to be particularly impactful. They also received assurances that the original colored school building, part of the Batten Hall complex, would not be demolished until 2025. This timeline allows the preservation of historical elements like windows and lights.
In an effort to foster community involvement and recognition of historical preservation, the Commission proposed the idea of a house selection contest. Mirroring the borough’s Halloween and Christmas contests, this initiative aims to raise public awareness and appreciate historically significant homes. The conversation also included a suggestion to award plaques or certificates to homeowners who have excelled in restoring and preserving their properties. Council Liaison DiMiceli’s interest in learning about historical home restoration sparked further dialogue on identifying original house elements and accessing preservation resources.
The Commission’s agenda also covered broader community concerns, including updates on the new police station and a lack of recent communication from the Commission. The meeting dates and previous meeting minutes were approved. Furthermore, the Commission received correspondence from the Department of the Army Corps of Engineers concerning waterfront development and approved a motion to join Preservation New Jersey.
During the session, the Commission discussed the aesthetic of houses in Fair Haven, emphasizing the importance of preserving the historical look and feel of the neighborhood. Members shared examples of houses that had undergone successful preservation and restoration, signaling the Commission’s desire to recognize and support such efforts.
Addressing environmental and infrastructure concerns, the Commission discussed flooding issues in certain areas, particularly the impact of development on stormwater management.
