- Meeting Overview:
The Fair Lawn School Board focused on student safety concerns and recognition of equity initiatives during its latest meeting. Topmost on the agenda was the issue of pedestrian safety around Forest Elementary School, highlighted by residents’ reports of a recent traumatic accident involving students. Additionally, Fair Lawn High School’s participation in the “No Place for Hate” program, in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League, was acknowledged, with the school set to be honored for fostering a safe and inclusive environment. The board also entertained the idea of monthly work sessions to enhance decision-making efficiency but reached no definitive resolution on implementing them.
During the meeting, the superintendent reported on the upcoming “No Place for Hate” Banner ceremony at New York University, where Fair Lawn High School will be recognized for its efforts to combat anti-Semitism and promote inclusivity. The planned activities for the program include addressing anti-Semitic incidents, observing Holocaust Remembrance Day, launching a climate survey, and holding a student Equity Workshop. The board also discussed an event to honor teachers of the year and staff members who have served for 25 years.
The urgency of pedestrian safety around Forest Elementary School was brought to the forefront by residents during the public comment section. Concerns were raised following an accident where children were struck by a vehicle near the school. A parent urged the board to take immediate action, suggesting a traffic study during school hours, the installation of crossing guards, and the implementation of flashing lights and warning signs in school zones. Another resident supported the need for safer pedestrian crossings along Berdan Avenue, pointing out the lack of crosswalks and potential risks to students walking to school. Residents expressed frustration with the municipality’s inaction on this matter and sought the board’s support in advocating for safety improvements. A board member acknowledged the need for collaboration with the municipality to tackle these safety issues, yet no specific plan was presented.
The board members debated various administrative matters, including the role and hours of a proposed strength and conditioning coach, as well as the approval process for new positions. Confusion arose over the start dates and salaries for these positions, along with a discussion about including longevity pay in the approved salaries.
A community member brought forth the topic of Jewish Heritage Month. Although materials and information were presented, there was no immediate response from the board regarding this proposal.
The idea of holding monthly work sessions was proposed by a board member to allow for more thorough discussions on various topics. While some members voiced support, others expressed concerns about scheduling conflicts and the redundancy of revisiting discussions during regular meetings. A suggestion for a board retreat to facilitate open dialogue and professional development was also mentioned. However, the board did not reach a consensus on the implementation of regular work sessions or a retreat.
Another resident stressed the impact of tax rate increases and called for transparency in fund allocation, specifically questioning the approval of a communication position and the disapproval of a Zoom license for parent participation.
