Falcon Heights City Council Awards Contract for New Community Park Shelter and Celebrates Youth Volunteerism
- Meeting Overview:
The Falcon Heights City Council, in its recent meeting, awarded a significant contract for the construction of a new park shelter and celebrated youth volunteerism with the Neil Kwong Youth Citizenship Award. The council’s agenda also covered updates to pedicab licensing laws, a discussion on affordable housing, and other community developments.
The most newsworthy outcome of the meeting was the council’s unanimous approval of a contract with New Look Contracting, Inc. for the Falcon Heights Community Park improvement project. The decision followed a thorough bidding process, in compliance with Minnesota statutes, resulting in New Look Contracting’s selection for their comprehensive proposal covering necessary park features. The contractor is noted for its experience and previous successful projects, and the council expressed excitement about the park project moving forward. Cedar Forest, the manufacturer of the park shelter, will oversee its assembly. Council members highlighted the importance of this project, which is expected to foster community engagement and provide a gathering space for residents.
In addition to infrastructure advancements, the council celebrated the outstanding contributions of local youth to the community. The Neil Kwong Youth Citizenship Award was presented to Rain, a young volunteer recognized for her exemplary community service and leadership. The award, established in 2001, honors youth between the ages of 12 to 19 who have made significant volunteer contributions. Rain expressed gratitude for the recognition and shared how her volunteer experiences, including mission trips, inspired her career choice in nursing. Her father, who nominated her, praised her dedication to community service and the values instilled by family members. Mayor Randy Gustafson emphasized the award’s role in encouraging youth to recognize community needs and contribute without seeking personal gain.
The council also addressed updates to the city code concerning pedicab licensing, prompted by safety concerns during the previous state fair season. The revised Ordinance 2,503 aims to enhance the safety and regulation of pedicab operations during the busy fair period. The updated ordinance brings Falcon Heights’ regulations in line with those of nearby cities like Saint Paul and Minneapolis. It includes provisions for passenger capacity and vehicle specifications to ensure compliance with industry standards.
Attention was also given to affordable housing initiatives. MWF Properties is working on acquiring land initially designated for the Amber Flats project to develop a 10-unit, age-restricted apartment building. Marty O’Connell from MWF Properties discussed the project’s challenges, including a significant financing gap and a timeline extending into 2026 for formal approvals. The council expressed excitement about the potential partnership with MWF Properties, recognizing the importance of affordable housing development for the community. Administrator Gustafson highlighted the opportunities for municipal support to strengthen the project’s application for Ramsey County affordable housing funds.
In other business, the council approved a resolution accepting resignations from community commissions and expressed gratitude for the service of outgoing members. They also discussed ongoing issues with streetlight repairs due to wire thefts, planning to implement more secure welding methods to deter further thefts. Additionally, the council approved an agreement with Verizon Wireless to deploy a temporary cell tower for improved coverage during events, which is anticipated to bring revenue to the city.
During the meeting’s information and announcements segment, updates were shared on various topics, including an extension of the franchise contract with Comcast and a potential levy increase by the local school district to support technology and security improvements. The council acknowledged the construction efforts and community engagement with ongoing projects, emphasizing the positive feedback from residents.
In the Community Forum segment, a resident inquired about initiatives to engage youth in the city, to which the council responded by highlighting various community events, open council meetings, and opportunities for residents to participate in commissions. Upcoming events, such as Restoration and Unity Day, were mentioned as efforts to promote community togetherness and involvement.
