Fall River Redevelopment Authority Secures $965,000 Seaport Grant for Northfield Point
- Meeting Overview:
The Fall River Redevelopment Authority secured a $965,000 Seaport Economic Grant to finance the final stage of development at Northfield Point. This funding will expedite efforts to complete the project by early summer, with plans to start the bidding process by the end of February or early March. The grant ensures the continuation of improvements at Northfield Point, which has already seen substantial progress, including the completion of revetment work and hydroseeding.
In addition to the grant news, the authority discussed the completion of cathodic protection work, with final inspections confirming it was finished in December. The project manager highlighted that all the work outlined for the contractor, Kavanaugh, was 100% completed, and the final requisition, including the release of retainage, was processed in the latest warrant.
The meeting also touched on the progress of a proposed federal contract related to moorings and a dinghy dock. The final count settled on 15 moorings, with the next steps involving putting the contract out to bid, although the project remains a few steps away from execution.
The authority received an update on the North Downtown District’s efforts to enhance street lighting along North Street. The installation of new globes and bulbs improved visibility, a long-term request from the community that was finally addressed. This change is expected to enhance safety and contribute to the ongoing revitalization efforts in the area.
On the regulatory front, the changes in Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) regulations were discussed. These changes require MEPA to review urban renewal plans within 30 days, potentially streamlining the approval process for the authority’s urban renewal plans. The authority is strategizing on how to take advantage of this development to expedite their plans.
Finally, the authority awaits news on their application for a TDI grant, with a decision expected in February. In the meantime, they are engaging with local community initiatives, such as the “Love Your Block” mini-grants, which have supported various community projects, including gardens and libraries in parks.
