Fanwood Borough Celebrates Women’s Achievements and Plans Infrastructure Upgrades
- Meeting Overview:
The Fanwood Borough Council meeting on March 20th was a blend of community celebration, infrastructure planning, and future initiatives. Highlighting the session was the recognition of Women’s History Month and the achievements of local organizations, alongside discussions on infrastructure improvements and community events.
The meeting began with a strong focus on celebrating Women’s History Month. A proclamation was introduced to honor the historical contributions of women and girls to American society. The proclamation emphasized Fanwood’s pride in its female leadership, acknowledging the mayor as the fourth female mayor in five terms. Two local educational leaders, referred to as Amy and Amy, were invited to accept recognition for their contributions to education. They expressed gratitude and highlighted the importance of strong role models for youth in the community.
In addition to the Women’s History Month proclamation, a second proclamation recognized the 90th anniversary of the College Club of Fanwood Scotch Plains. This organization has supported women’s continuing education by awarding scholarships to local female students over the decades. Joan Shubish, co-president of the College Club, accepted the proclamation and shared the club’s history, noting its financial support for women’s higher education since its inception in 1933.
The meeting also highlighted the contributions of Girl Scouts in the borough. The mayor expressed pride in the community service projects led by the Girl Scouts, which included creating a little free library and organizing community food drives. The scouts were commended for their involvement and encouraged to continue their community contributions.
Infrastructure planning was another significant topic at the meeting. The council discussed a resolution to submit a grant application to Union County for sewer lining on several roads, including Robin Road and Pandit Court. Questions about the inclusion of South Avenue in the project led to a clarification that it was not part of the infrastructure grant. The resolution passed unanimously after amending the minutes for accuracy.
The council also addressed the purchase of signage for the Family Memorial Library construction site. This resolution was approved following a roll call vote, and the council expressed support for the project. Another resolution related to the Carriage House Roof Project was introduced, with the project noted to be under budget. The council discussed the timeline for the project, anticipating it would start soon after contract finalization.
The conversation turned to public safety, with the council approving a resolution for the renewal of a police body camera program. This program includes software and technical support, with a total cost of $30,315 over two years. The council emphasized the importance of maintaining long-term storage for the footage captured by the cameras.
Community events were also a focal point of the meeting. Preparations for the upcoming Memorial Day Parade were discussed, with Shonda Erb selected as the Grand Marshal. The council encouraged community involvement in the parade and shared a light-hearted exchange about creating floats.
The meeting included updates on public works, with a resolution concerning the Fanwood Nature Center’s improvements. This project involves constructing two bridges and stone dust paths, partially funded by a grant. The council expressed a desire to preserve open space funds for future needs and suggested seeking additional funding sources.
Attention was drawn to economic development updates, with discussions on a proposal for a transaction window at the police department potentially eligible for American Rescue Plan funding. The council also discussed the Curano Square site plan application and the need for a planner for the planning board.
The session concluded with public comments, where a resident inquired about a shared services agreement with Somerset County related to CDL driving certifications for public works employees. Questions were raised about the budget and the town’s debt limit, with clarifications requested on the financial aspects.
