Fanwood Borough Council Approves Shared Court Services with Garwood Amid Community Development Updates
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Fanwood Borough Council unanimously approved a shared court services agreement with the Borough of Garwood, discussed new economic developments downtown, and highlighted community engagement activities, including a Lego event and tree plantings. The council also addressed public concerns about property taxes and parking regulations.
The most notable topic at the meeting was the council’s approval of a shared court services agreement with Garwood. Council member Anthony Carter reported on the collaboration, which is set to formally combine court operations between the two boroughs, pending approval from the administrative office of courts. The agreement, expected to take effect on February 1, aims to streamline judicial processes and improve efficiency. Scott Sammon, an attorney involved in the negotiations, was present to answer any questions regarding the arrangement.
Turning to development updates, the council discussed progress at Corano Square, which recently acquired the necessary Department of Transportation permits. This project, formerly known as the AMP site, will feature residential units and a new 5,000-square-foot restaurant. As part of the development, a liquor store is being temporarily relocated during construction, with its operating hours extended to include Sundays, reportedly boosting customer traffic.
Adding to the economic vibrancy, the council announced the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Double Jelly, a new retail establishment, scheduled for December 20. Additionally, two new businesses—offering light beam therapy and hot yoga—are in the process of setting up in the downtown area, with signage already visible.
Community engagement was another focal point of the meeting. A Lego event scheduled for March 21 aims to bring families together to construct models of historical buildings in the community. Participants will be assigned specific structures and provided with Lego kits to create representations, though the models will not be kept. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote historical awareness and community involvement.
The environmental commission highlighted a recent Eagle Scout project, which involved the planting of 11 Atlantic white cedar saplings in the nature center by scout Payton Rose. The project has contributed to increased usage of the nature center, with ongoing activities drawing more visitors. A council member expressed gratitude to Leslie Speck and others for maintaining the gardens at Borough Hall for the winter season.
Public concerns were also addressed during the meeting. Gary Morris, a resident of South Avenue, questioned the tax status of a nearby property, 40 South Avenue, which he claimed was paying lower taxes compared to others. Morris also sought clarification on parking regulations at the post office, referencing a new towing sign that might confuse customers about their parking rights. He urged the council to investigate these issues, emphasizing the need for clear communication to ensure public safety.
In other reports, the police commissioner noted an increase in service calls in November, with 1,230 calls averaging 41 per day. This included traffic enforcement details and building security checks, resulting in 218 summonses. Residents were reminded of a new parking ordinance effective in January, with advice to heed signage to avoid fines. The police department’s involvement in Veterans Day ceremonies and local school events was also acknowledged.
The public works department reported the completion of leaf collection and provided updates on property maintenance notices, while the library highlighted youth service events and plans for a blood drive. The historic preservation committee discussed the AmRev 250 project and plans for a Lego building initiative.
