Fanwood Council Approves $10.7 Million Bond for Long-Term Capital Projects
- Meeting Overview:
The Fanwood Borough Council meeting, held with Mayor Colleen Mahr absent, featured the approval of a $10,699,000 bond resolution to finance long-term capital projects, including enhancements to the carriage house and a new library. Alongside this, the council discussed a range of community and public safety reports, alongside the introduction of a program supporting senior citizens with daily tasks.
The council’s approval of resolution 2026-01-047 marked a key decision to transition short-term notes into more stable, long-term bonds, typically spanning 25 to 30 years. This financial move aims to fund essential capital projects, with particular focus on the improvement of the carriage house and the construction of a new library.
The meeting also involved the presentation of a proclamation recognizing the planning committee for the 17th annual Scotch Plains Fanwood Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. This event highlighted the community’s dedication to service projects that address local needs, with over 20 initiatives carried out this year. Councilwoman Patricia Walsh expressed gratitude for the committee’s dedication, emphasizing the positive impact on community unity and service.
Public safety was a focus, with reports from both the fire department and the rescue squad. The fire department responded to 27 calls in December, including one structural fire and several motor vehicle accidents, contributing to a total of 306 emergency assistance calls for the year. The rescue squad, meanwhile, reported 21 calls with improved response times. These reports underscored the vital role of volunteer firefighters and rescue personnel in maintaining community safety.
The Department of Public Works provided an overview of their recent activities, including routine maintenance tasks and a substantial leaf cleanup operation, collecting approximately 8,000 cubic yards of leaves. The department also undertook snow removal operations, clocking 202 hours of overtime, and addressed a significant sewer blockage in the business district.
The meeting also highlighted ongoing community initiatives, including the historic preservation commission’s preparation for the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. Plans for this celebration include a variety of events and activities, such as a Lego build, and emphasize collaboration across multiple departments to honor this milestone.
The environmental commission discussed goals for the year, focusing on obtaining certification from the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayor’s Monarch Pledge program. Concerns about the safety of paths in the nature center, affected by heavy rain and flooding, were raised, with requests for assistance from the Department of Public Works in addressing these issues. The commission also explored potential grants for environmental initiatives.
A legislative update was provided regarding a new bill in New Jersey aimed at reducing excess packaging and utensils in fast-food establishments. This legislation requires customers to request utensils and condiments, a move intended to reduce waste and save costs for businesses. This aligns with the green team’s efforts to promote sustainability within the community.
Additionally, a new senior program was introduced, offering support for elderly residents with transportation and daily tasks. This initiative, a collaboration with local churches, is designed to assist seniors in need regardless of religious affiliation.
The library report noted successful engagement with youth through various programs, with plans for a Maker Day featuring STEM activities for families. This complements the broader community focus on educational and recreational opportunities.
