Faribault City Council Approves Key Infrastructure Projects Amidst Budget Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Faribault City Council meeting, several infrastructure projects were approved, including significant improvements to the Water Reclamation Facility and a new water main crossing under the Straight River. The council addressed potential budget overruns and the importance of these projects for the city’s future development.
A major focus of the meeting was the approval of plans and specifications for improvements at the Water Reclamation Facility. The improvements include upgrades to the final clarifiers, digesters, and the potential replacement of the primary clarifier splitter box. The launder cover installations aim to prevent algae growth, which can hinder treatment efficiency and increase energy costs. The council discussed the financial implications, as the estimated cost of $535,000 slightly exceeds the budget. However, bundling the projects is expected to attract more competitive bids, potentially reducing costs.
Additionally, the council approved the revised plans for a 20-inch water main crossing under the Straight River. This project addresses a infrastructure need, as the existing water main has previously experienced fractures. The new crossing will provide a more secure water supply route and eliminate the risk associated with the older infrastructure. The project, with a construction estimate of $1.5 million, is slated for completion by September.
The council also deliberated on ordinance amendments concerning backflow prevention devices. The changes clarify the regulatory framework and establish penalties for non-compliance. The amendments are part of a partnership with BSI Incorporated to manage the data of over a thousand backflow preventers in the community.
In other business, the council granted a conditional use permit for Little Scholars LLC to establish a childcare facility on Wilson Avenue. The facility complies with zoning and Shoreland overlay district standards, and the Department of Natural Resources expressed no opposition.
