Faribault Planning Commission Recommends Easement Vacation, Delays Data Center Review
- Meeting Overview:
In the recent Faribault Planning Commission meeting, the commission recommended an ordinance to vacate a drainage and utility easement at 1920 20th Street Northwest while deciding to defer a decision on an environmental assessment for a proposed data center.
The commission addressed an ordinance to vacate a drainage and utility easement on the property acquired by Mala Auto Body. This easement was identified during the title research phase of planning. The staff reviewed the proposal and found no utilities within the easement, recommending the ordinance be forwarded to the city council for approval. It was noted that while the plat system is not ideal, comprehensive remediation would require financial resources, which the city has not allocated.
Another topic was the environmental assessment worksheet (EAW) for a proposed 500,000-square-foot data center in the industrial park. The project requires an EAW due to its size. The developers had prepared a draft and opened it for a 30-day public review. However, they decided to take additional time to address public comments before proceeding. The commission agreed to table the discussion until the next meeting. Questions were raised about the data center’s potential power consumption, though it was clarified that power issues fall outside the commission’s purview, as they involve negotiations between the developer and the power provider. The EAW will address other impacts like water use, sewer, and traffic.
