Fifth Graders Honored with Awards and Celebrations at New Milford Moving-Up Ceremony
- Meeting Overview:
The recent New Milford School Board meeting featured a spirited and emotional moving-up ceremony for fifth graders at Berkeley School and BFG Gibbs Elementary School, highlighting the students’ accomplishments and readiness for middle school. The gathering emphasized personal growth, academic achievements, and community involvement, with various educators and administrators lauding the students’ efforts and contributions.
The ceremony’s highlight was the presentation of awards recognizing exceptional student achievements. At Berkeley School, the Junior Women’s Club of Riverdale and New Milford awarded the Most Improved Student Award to Nate Rizzes, acknowledging his progress during the school year. The Principal’s Award was conferred upon Clara San Pedro and Aon B., honoring their embodiment of the school’s core values and positive influence on peers. Similarly, at BFG Gibbs Elementary School, the Junior Women’s Club of River Edge presented the Most Improved Student Award to Ava Lee Medina for her dedication and perseverance. Mark Stucky received the Principal’s Award for his academic dedication and uplifting presence among his classmates.
In addition to these individual accolades, the ceremony recognized groups of students who excelled in music, sports, and community service. The string orchestra and choir programs at both schools celebrated their participants for their dedication and achievements. Students in the orchestra and band were acknowledged for impressive performances, while choir members were lauded for mastering varied repertoires throughout the year. Physical Education teachers recognized students like Sophia Tima and Milan Ignasio for exemplifying leadership and sportsmanship, emphasizing the importance of their positive attitudes and efforts.
Community service initiatives undertaken by the students were also highlighted. At Berkeley School, the Student Council organized several successful projects, such as a partnership with a local recycling program and a Turkey Trot benefiting local food pantries. Additionally, they led a fundraising effort for hurricane relief, raising nearly $1,000 for the American Red Cross in just one week. The Spirit Club and safety patrols were commended for fostering school spirit and ensuring safety, respectively. Students involved in these activities were acknowledged by name and received applause from the audience.
The ceremony also featured speeches from school administrators and teachers, who expressed pride in the students’ growth and readiness for the challenges of middle school. Principals at both schools emphasized the importance of personal and academic development, encouraging students to continue exploring new interests and forging new friendships as they transition to the next stage of their education. The speeches underscored the emotional investment of teachers in their students’ success and the supportive role of families in their educational journey.
The fifth-grade moving-up ceremony concluded with the presentation of promotion certificates to each student. Families were invited to join in a celebratory atmosphere, with refreshments served in the gymnasium in honor of the students’ achievements. The event was characterized by a sense of community and collective pride, as educators, parents, and students alike reflected on the accomplishments and growth of the graduating class of 2025.
