Firefighter Dispute and Flag Display Concerns Dominate Long Branch City Council Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Long Branch City Council meeting on August 13, 2025, was marked by significant public discourse on two main issues: allegations of misinformation in a fire department equipment deal and objections to the display of foreign flags at Pier Village. These topics generated heated public comments and highlighted community tensions.
During the public participation segment, a resident, Vincent Leapour, accused the city’s business administrator of misinformation regarding a failed equipment deal involving the Long Branch and West Long Branch fire departments. Leapour claimed that statements at a previous council meeting by the administrator, identified as Shirley, were misleading and contained falsehoods about fire response incidents and the necessity of a new ladder truck. Leapour cited a letter signed by a Long Branch firefighter, detailing inaccuracies in Shirley’s remarks, including a disputed incident at a West Long Branch school that was not a fire but a smoke detector issue. Furthermore, the letter criticized Shirley for disparaging West Long Branch firefighters and questioned financial discrepancies in the proposed purchase of a new ladder truck.
Another contentious issue was raised by a resident from nearby Titan Falls, Jeffrey Walstein, who expressed concern over the predominance of Israeli flags at Pier Village, contrasting with a single American flag. Walstein argued that since Pier Village was developed on land acquired through eminent domain, it should reflect American symbols rather than those of a foreign state. He further questioned the allocation of city resources, such as police presence and marketing support, asserting that public funds should not primarily benefit a private development owned by foreign interests.
In response, a council member explained that the police presence at Pier Village is intended to ensure public safety due to heavy foot traffic, not to protect specific individuals or entities. The council did not engage in real-time responses to these public comments during the meeting.
Aside from public comments, the meeting included acknowledgments of local events and city programs. The mayor and council members commended the police department and others for organizing successful community events such as the National Night Out. Additionally, they announced upcoming cultural and recreational activities, including a Bruce Springsteen exhibition, a classic car show, and community movie nights.
The program’s renewal underscores Long Branch’s efforts to address mental health issues in policing, reflecting broader trends in law enforcement practices.
