Fort Myers Beach Task Force Approves Printing of 20,000 Children’s Coloring Books Despite Budget Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
The Fort Myers Beach Environmental Resources Task Force meeting revolved around several discussions, notably the approval to print 20,000 children’s coloring books, preparations for Arbor Day, and the naming of the “MURF Award. ” The meeting also addressed beach management strategies and sea turtle conservation efforts.
The most notable discussion of the meeting involved the funding and approval to print 20,000 children’s coloring books. A detailed financial overview revealed that the total contributions for this initiative amounted to $8,932.92, which included a $4,000 donation from a community foundation. However, concerns about financial accountability and budget clarity were raised. Members discussed whether the remaining budget would suffice without overspending. A motion to release funds for the coloring books passed with a narrow margin.
In addition to the coloring books, preparations for the upcoming Arbor Day event were discussed with enthusiasm. Plans included sourcing trees from local nurseries and involving the garden club in growing recommended trees from seeds. The idea of allowing individuals to donate trees in memory of loved ones was also proposed to encourage community involvement. The committee aimed to plant around 150 trees, with a focus on enhancing vegetation at beach access points.
Another notable topic was the official renaming of the “Murphy Award” to the “MURF Award,” aligning it with the task force’s name. After confirming the lack of official records for the previous designation, a motion to rename the award was unanimously approved. The committee also discussed awarding the MURF Award retroactively to local businesses and individuals who have contributed to environmental efforts.
The task force addressed beach management strategies, including a proposal for sand fencing to trap blowing sand and create natural drifts. This initiative aims to elevate lower areas of the beach and was awaiting feedback from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection before proceeding. Discussions also touched on the need for consensus among property owners for a comprehensive beach management plan, particularly in areas affected by contractor work.
In relation to sea turtle conservation, the meeting covered troubling statistics from the recent nesting season. A total of 9,678 eggs were laid, with 3,843 unhatched and 5,465 resulting in live hatchlings. However, 29 nests experienced disorientation due to artificial lighting, highlighting the need for proactive education on turtle-friendly lighting. This concern tied into a presentation on a new tool designed to help beachfront property owners assess their lighting’s impact on sea turtles.
The task force also celebrated the successful beach restoration project, which involved placing 927,448 cubic yards of sand on Estero Island. The contractor, ATNA, provided additional sand beyond what was paid for, resulting in approximately 20,000 cubic yards of free sand. This project aimed to enhance the beach’s tourist appeal while addressing environmental concerns.
