Franklin Library Board Approves $40,000 Donation to Name Children’s Section
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Franklin Library Board meeting, the board approved a $40,000 donation from Jennifer Kellogg on behalf of the Diamante family to rename the library’s children’s section. This donation will commemorate Francis and Anna Diamante’s contributions to education in Franklin Township, with a designated area named the Francis and Anna Diamante wing, complete with a plaque detailing their impact on local schools. Additionally, the board discussed potential future renovations to accommodate a growing demand for meeting rooms, and addressed challenges related to eBook pricing and access.
Jennifer Kellogg’s generous contribution will ensure that the legacy of Francis and Anna Diamante, who were influential educators in the community, is preserved and celebrated. The Diamante wing will serve as a constant reminder of their dedication to education, and the accompanying plaque will provide visitors with insight into their lasting impact on local schools.
In addition to the donation, the board discussed the director’s compensation, approving a motion to increase the director’s salary to $159,000 effective July 1, 2025.
The meeting also included a report on recent financial activities and outreach efforts. January, the board’s financial presenter, highlighted significant expenses related to equipment services, such as service contracts for security gates and new equipment for public use. She emphasized that many of these costs are one-time purchases and should not recur at the same rate in the future.
The board’s discussions extended into the realm of digital resources, focusing on the operational aspects and challenges associated with eBooks. Concerns were raised about the higher cost of eBooks compared to physical books, which impacts the library’s budget and collection strategies. The complexities of digital ownership and licensing were also noted, as board members sought to understand the implications of eBook borrowing limitations.
The meeting further explored the topic of electric vehicle charging stations, with a focus on the potential installation of a Level 3 charger. This type of charger offers faster charging capabilities compared to the existing Level 2 chargers, which have been underutilized. The board examined possible locations for the new station, taking into account the existing power infrastructure and community demand. Concerns about public awareness of the current Level 2 chargers were raised, with clarifications made regarding their availability for public use.
In new business, the board addressed the policy on meeting room reservations, emphasizing that the library does not rent rooms but allows nonprofit groups to reserve spaces after completing a vetting process. Plans for future renovations were hinted at, with a focus on expanding meeting room availability to accommodate high demand. These renovations are part of a broader effort to enhance the library’s capacity as a community resource, facilitating events and meetings of various sizes.
