Franklin School Board Celebrates First Midyear Graduate, Highlights Numerous Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The Franklin School Board meeting on January 29th was marked by the celebration of multiple student achievements, including the district’s first midyear graduation of a student athlete, and the recognition of educational initiatives facilitated by the Franklin Township Warrior Education Foundation. The board also addressed ongoing projects, superintendent search updates, and public school community involvement.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to celebrating the midyear graduation of Miles Mudro, a student athlete from Franklin High School. A coach discussed the importance of this milestone, expressing gratitude to the board and administration for their support in enabling Mudro to become the first student athlete in their football program to graduate midyear. The coach emphasized the critical advantage of midyear graduation for athletes aspiring to play at the college level, particularly at Division One schools, where participation in spring practices is essential. He highlighted the broader impact of Mudro’s achievement, noting that it set a precedent for future athletes and could potentially encourage local talent to remain in the public school system instead of transferring to private institutions offering similar opportunities. The coach acknowledged the board’s initial skepticism but praised their eventual support, stating, “We will encourage our local kids, our top local athletes to stay in Franklin, okay? Stay public.”
The meeting also spotlighted the Franklin Township Warrior Education Foundation’s efforts in enhancing educational experiences through grants. Several teachers presented projects funded by the foundation for the 2024-25 school year. These included a partnership at Claremont Elementary aimed at fostering reading, a photography club benefitting from new equipment, and a recess soccer club grant that provided new goals to enhance playtime. In addition, a grant facilitated celebrations of Muslim Heritage Month at Franklin High School, promoting cultural awareness through activities like trivia, Arabic calligraphy, and a student writing contest.
Superintendent Dr. John A. Ravally provided updates on the recent New Jersey CUSAC visit, a triannual audit assessing district performance across various areas. He commended the district’s preparedness and acknowledged the executive county superintendent’s praise during the review. The district is awaiting final scores from the New Jersey Department of Education, expected later in the spring. Dr. Ravally also expressed gratitude to the buildings and grounds staff for their efforts during a recent snow blizzard.
The board took a moment to honor the memory of three individuals who recently passed away, including Joshua Soliv, son of a literacy coach, and former teachers Mr. Ani Aia and Miss Betty Demonic. The contributions of Miss Demonic, in particular, were celebrated, with a board member sharing personal anecdotes about her impact on students’ lives and the arts program in the district. The board member stated, “Betty brought life to the stage. She brought life to students who had lack of confidence.”
Recognition was also given to Franklin High School student Miles Sheret, who received the Young Arts Award for excellence in voice, joining a prestigious group of young artists nationwide. Additionally, four students were selected for the New Jersey Guitar Orchestra.
The meeting included updates on various district initiatives and events, such as the Future Business Leaders of America Club Talent Show and the Robotics Competition. The board addressed the ongoing superintendent search, announcing that a personnel committee had selected a firm to assist in the process. A profile to guide the search for the next superintendent will be developed with input from various stakeholders.
Public comments during the meeting included expressions of gratitude from community members and parents, such as Wendy Ria and Deb Pillo, co-presidents of the Franklin High School PTSO. They highlighted upcoming fundraising events, including a designer bag bingo and tricky tray, aimed at raising funds for Project Graduation Night. Parent Tina, mother of Miles Modro, also expressed appreciation for the board’s support, emphasizing the financial relief provided by scholarships for her son’s college expenses.
Committee reports covered a range of topics, including a finance update detailing expenditures on charter schools, personnel discussions regarding the superintendent search, and curriculum developments introducing new courses. Safety committee updates addressed suspension and harassment incidents, while facilities reports noted progress on local school projects.
