The appointment of Ed Ptnik as the new deputy mayor of Franklin Township was met with unanimous approval from the council. Ptnik, taking on this role, emphasized the town’s commitment to honoring diversity, marking a significant moment for the community as he became the first openly gay individual to hold the position.
Mayor Phil Kramer, in his address, acknowledged the diversity of the council and emphasized the town’s acceptance of different backgrounds. Kramer expressed enthusiasm about collaborative projects with the Board of Education, Raritan Valley Community College, and the YMCA.
Councilwoman Kimberly Francois, who was re-elected, expressed her gratitude and reiterated her commitment to serving the township’s youth, seniors, and families. Councilman Rahwayn Barrison thanked the community for their support and outlined his dedication to issues such as youth education, community safety, and environmental protection. Additionally, Alex Kazi, a newly elected councilman, shared his vision for the township that centered around creating more equity among residents through initiatives aimed at employment opportunities, addressing food and rental insecurities, and supporting small businesses.
The meeting also addressed important nominations and reappointments. Lewis Reown was nominated and approved as the new Township attorney. Muhammad Jallo’s swearing-in as the Township Prosecutor was a notable event, marking the continued diversification of the town’s leadership.
The council moved forward with approving nominations for various other positions, including Bond Council, Township Auditor, Finance Consultant, Township Engineer, and Public Defender, among others.
During the council comments, there were expressions of congratulations and encouragement for the newly appointed and reappointed members. Councilwoman Udin spoke about the importance of diversity in decision-making, and Councilman Wright acknowledged the diverse perspectives represented on the council.
Mayor Kramer also introduced the “One Family One Fight” program aimed at helping students and parents with college preparation. The Mayor shared details of the upcoming sessions and encouraged the community to participate.
The meeting included a public discussion segment where community members voiced their appreciation and highlighted issues such as the need for services in the fourth ward, support for women-owned small businesses, and addressing the needs of the African community in terms of employment and immigration.
The Town Manager congratulated reelected and newly elected officials, and shared updates on curbside Christmas tree pickup, a construction permit amnesty, and a free rabies clinic.
