Freehold Regional School Board Celebrates Student Achievements and Discusses Future Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Freehold Regional School Board meeting focused on celebrating student accomplishments across academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities. Recognitions were given to students achieving National Merit status, perfect SAT scores, and performances in various competitions. The board also discussed plans for facility updates and initiatives to support academic programs.
The meeting commenced with Dr. Nicole P. Hazel, the superintendent, expressing gratitude for the presence of students, parents, and family members. The evening’s agenda was heavily centered on recognizing students from the district’s six high schools for their outstanding achievements.
Among the highlights was the recognition of several students from Manalapan High School. Emily Chen was distinguished as a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist, a prestigious honor awarded to less than 1% of high school seniors nationwide. Joofie Lim was also celebrated as a Governor’s STEM Scholar, one of 101 students in New Jersey selected for the program. In addition, seven students from Manalapan High School were recognized for achieving perfect scores on the math section of the SAT, including Sarah Absul and Joseph Cardillo.
Landon Hartung was awarded for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, having completed a project that involved honoring local veterans through hometown hero banners. This project demonstrated collaboration with local government and extensive community outreach. Additionally, the girls’ soccer team from Manalapan celebrated a historic achievement by winning the short conference title for the first time in 38 years, while the boys’ cross-country team was recognized for their impressive performance as the number two public school in the state.
The recognition segment proceeded with students from other high schools in the district. At Howell High School, students involved in the TSA program were commended for their participation in STEM competitions. Freehold High School’s Cyber Security Club was acknowledged for winning first place at the University of North Dakota’s Cyberhawks National Capture the Flag Finals. The esports team was also praised for securing second place in the Garden State esports championship.
In addition to student achievements, the board discussed several updates and future initiatives. Preparations for the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment for juniors were outlined, with plans for tutorial and afterschool help sessions focusing on English Language Arts and mathematics. The district is also upgrading camera systems in high schools, with ongoing progress at Howell High School and plans to extend to other schools.
The finance committee provided an update on an audit, which had been rescheduled due to a federal government shutdown. The committee also explored a pilot program for advertising in athletics to generate revenue for extracurricular programs, addressing rising staffing costs during games. Furthermore, the board discussed an electrical contractor bid to maintain and upgrade HVAC systems, preparing them to accommodate window air conditioning units in classrooms.
Facility project planning was another key topic, with discussions on projected projects scheduled for the summer of 2026. The board emphasized the need for an electrical contractor to assist with replacing chillers at Colts Neck High School to improve comfort for students and staff.
The meeting concluded with a moment of remembrance for Daniel Shine, a long-time teacher and esteemed football and track coach who passed away. The board shared condolences and recognized his contributions to the district.
