Freehold Regional School Board Prioritizes Facility Upgrades and Bids Farewell to Superintendent
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Freehold Regional School Board meeting, attention was directed towards the district’s facility improvements, safety measures, and the departure of the superintendent.
In a focused discussion on district facilities, the board emphasized the ongoing and planned improvements across various schools. A major component of this initiative is the upgrade of security systems throughout the district’s high schools. The new security camera systems will enable law enforcement to access footage in real-time during emergencies, a crucial enhancement for student and staff safety. Additionally, each high school will receive an additional panic button, in compliance with Alyssa’s Law, designed to alert law enforcement immediately in critical situations.
Freehold High School is undergoing a restoration of its auditorium. The installation of a new security vestibule further enhances safety. Meanwhile, Freehold Township High School has completed extensive renovations, including a full replacement of the auditorium stage and improvements to the media center to foster a more inviting learning environment.
The board also shared updates on Howell High School, where modernized flooring in the student center and repaved parking lots were highlighted. Manalapan High School has seen renovations, including a newly paved student parking lot and a landscaping project. These improvements aim to create a welcoming entrance, complemented by the complete renovation of the technology education lab, equipping students with essential skills for a tech-driven future.
The meeting included an overview of financial planning for these projects. The district is awaiting state aid numbers, which will be released 48 hours after the governor’s budget address on March 10. This information is critical for finalizing the district’s budget, with tentative plans to present it on March 27. The administration expressed gratitude to the board and community for their support, which has facilitated tax levy increases over the past two years, enabling these essential infrastructure projects.
Attention then shifted to the emotional farewell of the superintendent, who is set to leave the district after a notable tenure. The superintendent reflected on his long-standing connection with the district, having served in various roles over 21 years, including teacher, supervisor, assistant principal, and principal at several schools within the district. He expressed gratitude to his mentors and colleagues, acknowledging the positive impact they had on his career. The superintendent also highlighted the district’s supportive environment.
The board members recognized the superintendent’s contributions, noting his commitment to the students and broader school community. His initiatives in curriculum and instruction were particularly commended, and his departure was described as bittersweet, with board members expressing confidence that Wall Township will benefit from his leadership.
In other meeting highlights, Callie Lash, a student representative from Manalapan High School, presented her experiences in the Science, Engineering, and Math (SNE) magnet program. She emphasized the hands-on learning opportunities provided by the program, including an internship with Mammoth County Engineering, which reinforced her aspiration to pursue a career in mechanical engineering.
The superintendent’s report also addressed the administration of the WIDA test for multilingual students, with 274 students participating in the assessment to measure English language proficiency. Additionally, the New Jersey Graduation Assessment is scheduled for March 17-20, with early dismissal planned for all schools during this period.
The meeting concluded with the approval of various agenda items, ranging from personnel changes to expenditures for facility updates. The board also approved the schedule of meetings for the second half of 2026 and policy revisions, including updates to the district mission statement and sexual harassment policies in compliance with Title IX and Title VIII regulations.
