Freehold Township School Board Highlights Student Achievement and Tackles Mold Issues
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Freehold Township School Board meeting, accomplishments in student performance were celebrated alongside discussions about pressing facility issues, notably mold management. The board reviewed the district’s strong performance in state assessments, recognized the need for ongoing facility maintenance, and explored innovative approaches to science education and bullying prevention.
A major focus of the meeting was the district’s impressive performance in state assessments, particularly the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA), where Freehold Township students outperformed state averages in language arts, math, and science. In language arts, 66% of students were proficient. Math scores showed 60.5% proficiency, an impressive 18.6% above the state rate. Although science proficiency was lower at 30%, it still surpassed the state average by 3.3% and represented a notable 5.2% increase from the previous year. These results placed local schools in the top 40% statewide, with middle schools ranking in the top 15%.
The board delved into subgroup performances, revealing steady improvements among Hispanic and Black students in language arts and math over recent years. Gender-based proficiency rates showed that female students excelled in language arts with a 73% proficiency rate, while male students led in math proficiency at 63%. The meeting also highlighted the district’s success in fostering cohort growth, tracking students’ progress over time and noting significant improvements in language arts proficiency from third to fifth grade.
Another important topic was the ongoing challenge of mold management within school facilities. Past incidents of mold issues, especially in older buildings, prompted discussions on air quality management and insurance implications. A maintenance reserve account was mentioned as a financial safety net for potential remediation efforts, emphasizing the need for continuous replenishment of surplus funds to support ongoing maintenance. The board expressed a commitment to diligent facility management to ensure a safe learning environment.
In addition to these topics, the board discussed the district’s restorative practices model, specifically the implementation of “seal and restore” circles, which contributed to a 41% reduction in harassment, intimidation, and bullying cases. The board reviewed the grades for the Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB) self-assessment. This compliance was credited for the district’s high scores in adherence to the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights.
The meeting also addressed innovative educational practices, including plans to reinvigorate science education through science celebration days and the use of platforms like I Ready for personalized instruction. The board acknowledged the importance of engagement and teamwork in enhancing student involvement and rigor in science.
Further, discussions included the district’s exploration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. Board members shared insights from recent conferences, emphasizing data privacy and security as concerns. Plans were underway to draft AI usage guidelines for students and staff.
Financial matters were also on the agenda, with reports on the district’s fiscal health and the approval of several financial items, such as claims and contracts for educational services. Discussions about the upcoming budget highlighted anticipated increases in healthcare costs and bond implications, necessitating careful financial planning.
As the meeting concluded, the board expressed gratitude for a donation from the Freehold Township Education Foundation, funding interactive technology for the Barcala School. The new 86-inch interactive boards were anticipated to enhance the educational experience for students and staff.
