Fridley School Board Celebrates Academic Gains, Joins League of Innovative Schools
- Meeting Overview:
The Fridley School Board meeting showcased significant academic improvements from its summer programs, announced the district’s admission to the League of Innovative Schools, and highlighted efforts to remove barriers for student participation in extracurricular activities. Ongoing construction and community engagement initiatives rounded out the agenda.
The board meeting commenced with a report on the Summer Rise program, which demonstrated substantial academic gains among students. English Language Arts (ELA) scores saw an impressive increase, with a 37.5% rise in students achieving basic or proficient levels from pre to post-tests. Mathematics results were equally notable, showing a 40.6% improvement in proficiency. The program, geared towards students of color and those economically disadvantaged, was lauded for its structured curriculum and high-quality instruction. The summer session engaged 340 students, resulting in significant performance improvements: the percentage of proficient students in math rose from 31% to 69%. Board members expressed admiration for these achievements.
In a notable development, the district was accepted into the League of Innovative Schools, a prestigious network of forward-thinking educational institutions. The application process was described as rigorous, involving an intense interview phase. Despite initial doubts, the district’s innovative approaches in staffing, threat management, and summer academic programs impressed the evaluators. Membership in the league promises access to research studies and collaborative support, promising future benefits for the district.
Efforts to enhance student engagement were further emphasized by the removal of activity fees. This initiative has made extracurricular activities more accessible, allowing more students to participate without financial hindrance. The activities director noted an increase in student signups and highlighted the provision of transportation for summer and fall activities. Free physical exams were also provided to 25 student-athletes, breaking down additional barriers to participation.
The meeting also addressed various construction projects aimed at improving district facilities. Progress was reported on the Vista Education Center, which has seen enrollment grow from 11 to 24 students, with further expansion plans underway. The importance of this program, particularly for students requiring specialized support, was underscored. Construction updates included the repair of a sinkhole at the middle school and ongoing landscaping projects to enhance the aesthetic appeal of school sites. Improvements to athletic facilities, such as new dugouts and a scoreboard, were also detailed.
Community engagement initiatives included the announcement of the 13th annual back-to-school resource fair, where backpacks and resources will be distributed to students. The event, supported by community partners, aims to foster a festive and supportive atmosphere at the start of the school year.
Challenges such as ongoing road construction near Hayes School were discussed, with solutions like a temporary bus route implemented to ensure student safety. The lack of prior notification from Anoka County about the construction was noted, and discussions with the county about creating school zones are ongoing.
