Fridley School Board Discusses Equity Framework and Approves Infrastructure Projects
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Fridley School Board meeting focused on the development of an equity framework, approval of significant infrastructure projects, and various educational updates. The board addressed the ongoing efforts to enhance inclusivity within the district and approved multiple logistical contracts to support upcoming renovations and improvements.
The introduction of Alta Sims, the district’s equity and inclusion coordinator, was a focal point of the meeting. Sims presented the inclusive excellence framework. She outlined the framework’s six pillars, which include vision, accessible opportunities, and an inclusive culture. Sims emphasized that this framework is a collective effort, involving board members, staff, students, and administration. The framework is designed to improve educational outcomes, particularly in reading and math, while ensuring all cultures are valued. Sims stressed the importance of using taxpayer funds effectively to benefit the community. Her presentation received positive feedback, with attendees expressing hope for the framework’s success in fostering a more equitable district environment.
The board also discussed upcoming infrastructure projects, with a focus on Fridley Middle School. Scheduled to begin in the summer of 2026, these projects include tuck-pointing for building exteriors, partial roof replacements, targeted window replacements, and classroom renovations. The renovations will involve asbestos removal, electrical upgrades, and an extensive locker room remodel to introduce additional storage and classroom space. Safety features will also be enhanced, and the pool facilities will be completed following recent maintenance. The board stressed the importance of signing contracts early to ensure timely material orders and bidding processes.
In addition to the middle school renovations, the board announced plans for athletic projects, such as installing an LED scoreboard to generate advertising revenue and upgrading the sports track for competition readiness. The board is researching field turf options to comply with Amara’s law. At Hayes Elementary School, a flooring project is set to commence, building on a recent initiative at Stevenson Elementary.
The meeting also highlighted the district’s legislative priorities, focusing on compensatory revenue challenges and the need for a revised funding formula. Board members expressed concern over the potential revenue loss if forms counting is eliminated, as nearly 60% of students qualify through direct certification. The board advocated for allowing forms to continue counting without reallocating funds from other sources. Special education transportation funding also emerged as a concern, with discussions on the proposed reduction exacerbating existing funding challenges. The board called for full funding of unemployment insurance, essential for maintaining a healthy workforce.
The meeting addressed external political influences on public education, with board members emphasizing the importance of diversity and community support. A board member articulated their determination to fight for educational values, highlighting Fridley’s strength in diversity.
The board approved several transportation contracts for 2025 through 2028. Contracts with First Student Transportation, Collaborative Student Transportation, and Halo Transportation received unanimous approval. Additionally, the board approved a service agreement for the Hayes Flooring Project and a professional services agreement for referendum-related construction. A motion to accept bids for a restroom remodel at Fridley High School passed without opposition.
The board celebrated staff retirements, recognizing two teachers for their long service to the district. It also approved the Long-Term Facilities Maintenance budget, with Fridley’s share based on net tax capacity and adjusted pupil units. Various policies were reviewed and approved, covering areas such as a drug-free workplace, Title IX non-discrimination, and crisis management.
