Fridley School Board Discusses Middle School Renovations and Celebrates Student Achievement
- Meeting Overview:
The recent meeting of the Fridley School Board covered several topics, including the approval of major renovation projects at Fridley Middle School and the celebration of student athletic achievements. The board also addressed initiatives like the “Grow Your Own” program aimed at strengthening the district’s teaching workforce and discussed efforts to support food security and community engagement.
One item at the meeting was the discussion about the upcoming renovation projects planned for Fridley Middle School. The renovation will include updates to the pool, locker rooms, and window remodels. The board received 13 bids across four categories: general contractor, mechanical, electrical, and controls. The recommended bids were from local contractors with a proven track record of success in the district. Versicon was selected for general contracting, Craft Mechanical for mechanical work, Retrofit for electrical, and UHL for controls. These selections were based on the contractors’ prior positive experiences with the district or its project management group, Inbuild. A board member inquired about the district’s experience with the selected vendors, and the response confirmed confidence in their capabilities.
Another focus of the meeting was the celebration of student athletic achievements. Two student-athletes, Alex Johnson and Sasha Bugs, reported on various sports teams’ successes. The adapted soccer team had four athletes earn varsity letters, with one being recognized as player of the week. The cross-country team saw all members achieving personal bests by the season’s end. The football team advanced to the section finals after a significant victory against the second-seed St. Anthony. Notably, senior goalkeeper Addison Alshshire from the girls’ soccer team broke the MHSL career saves record, concluding with a remarkable 1,117 saves. The girls’ swim and dive team also performed admirably, with all three relay members advancing to the section final, and individual swimmer Athena Taber broke the 27-second barrier in the 50 freestyle.
The meeting also highlighted ongoing efforts to address food insecurity within the district. The Superintendent expressed pride in the district’s proactive response, emphasizing that while addressing food insecurity is not the primary responsibility of the school district, it is important for student welfare. The Superintendent mentioned the local support and community meals organized by various organizations, including the teachers’ union, which have contributed to food distribution for families in need.
In addition to these topics, the board discussed the “Grow Your Own” program, which aims to cultivate local talent into teaching positions. This initiative allows participants to pursue special education certifications and master’s degrees at no upfront cost, with the district covering tuition and associated fees. The Superintendent emphasized the comprehensive approach to recruiting and retaining educators, noting that the program has effectively filled vacancies, particularly in special education. A board member asked about the number of participants in the program and whether graduates were required to return to the district post-certification. The Superintendent promised to provide updated figures and clarified that while funding is limited, the program is flexible in terms of university selection for training.
The board also addressed efforts to retain international candidates within the district. The conversation touched on the H-3 trainee visa limitations and the importance of adhering to legal guidelines in employer sponsorship to ensure fairness.
In terms of community engagement, the meeting highlighted the successful fall activities and events reported by Ad Ree and Afalabi Branchway. The removal of activity fees and provision of transportation led to an increase in middle school participation in sports and activities. The successful senior kickoff event and Tiger Club family night were well-attended.
Finally, the board addressed administrative matters, such as the approval of bids for the Fridley Middle School renovation projects and a resolution to consolidate polling places for elections, both of which passed unanimously. The meeting concluded with a review of upcoming dates, including the Polar Plunge event to support Special Olympics and the Tuck Everlasting musical, before adjourning.
