Galloway School Board Addresses Bullying, Mental Health, and Inclusivity at October Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
In a meeting characterized by a focus on student welfare, the Galloway School Board tackled issues surrounding bullying, mental health support, and inclusivity, while also addressing administrative updates and community concerns. The board discussed the current state of bullying cases within the district, the emotional toll on students, and the measures in place to support both victims and accused individuals. Adjustmentsttention was also given to mental health resources, collaboration with local food programs, and public commentary on sensitive community topics.
The centerpiece of the meeting was a detailed presentation on the Student Safety Data System (SSDS) and harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB) data. The presentation, which is mandated to be reported twice annually, covered incidents from the latter half of the 2024-2025 school year. It offered an in-depth look at various categories such as violence, vandalism, substance abuse, and weapons offenses. A particular focus was given to confirmed HIB cases and the rigorous processes involved in preliminary investigations. The presentation underscored the importance of training and programs to bolster anti-bullying efforts, revealing that 328 such programs had been implemented throughout the school year.
The board celebrated a self-assessment score of 76 out of 78 on the district’s HIB grades. This score, based on an evaluation of eight elements including training and investigations, was heralded as a sign of progress.
The discussion on bullying extended beyond the presentation, as concerns were raised about the emotional impact on students, including “school anxiety” and “school phobia.” The board emphasized the necessity of distinguishing between victims and accused individuals, advocating for tailored approaches based on individual cases. Questions were posed about the training provided to parents regarding bullying laws and the criteria for distinguishing bullying from conflict. Although parents do not receive formal training, the administration confirmed that discussions about the anti-bullying law are integrated into parent-student-staff meetings.
In response to requests from special needs families, the board committed to engaging these families in discussions about the anti-bullying law, with plans for an outreach and a meet-and-greet event. Additionally, a proposal was introduced to create a public service announcement to clarify the differences between conflict and bullying, aimed at reducing confusion among families.
The meeting also highlighted the district’s summer initiatives focused on food assistance. Through partnerships with programs like Cooper Levenson’s “Let Us Eat, Please” and Stockton Sustainable Farm, the district successfully expanded food distribution efforts to families in need. Future plans include continuing these partnerships and exploring new initiatives to provide further support.
A section of the meeting was dedicated to public commentary, which brought forth a range of opinions on sensitive topics such as mental health, inclusivity, and the responsibilities of the school board. One former board member defended the educators’ efforts to create a safe environment and corrected misinformation about youth suicide statistics, emphasizing the need for proactive measures. Another resident expressed gratitude for the support his son with disabilities received, urging the promotion of hiring individuals with disabilities within the school system.
Concerns about the use of the term “hate” in public discussions were raised, with a caution against associating disagreements about child welfare with hate. The importance of addressing root causes of unhappiness in children was noted, highlighting the need for a comprehensive understanding of mental health challenges.
