Galloway School Board Partners with Rotary Club to Support Homeless Students
- Meeting Overview:
The Galloway Township Board of Education meeting featured a partnership with the local Rotary Club, focusing on providing care packages to McKinney-Vento students classified as homeless. The meeting also addressed various school activities, student council updates, and institutional recognitions, while several routine administrative matters were handled smoothly.
Highlighting the meeting was a presentation on the district’s initiative to support McKinney-Vento students. These students, often facing financial hardships, are eligible for free and reduced lunch and require basic necessities at home. The board discussed assembling care packages containing essential items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, and deodorant. The rising costs of groceries have made these items more critical for families in need.
In a gesture of community support, a Rotary Club representative announced a donation of $2,035 to assist in the creation of these care packages. The donation was made even more effective through a partnership with a local shop that previously offered discounts on necessary items for the care packages, allowing the funds to stretch further in purchasing supplies. The donation was commemorated with a photo opportunity.
Further, the meeting recognized January as School Board Recognition Month, appreciating the dedication and volunteer work of the board members. In honor of their service, a program was introduced to purchase books for school libraries, each featuring a placard with the name of a board member and the year of their service. This initiative aims to maintain the legacy of the board members’ contributions within the educational community.
The meeting also featured an update from the student council, presented by a representative named Trinity. The council had recently completed a holiday spirit week and a volleyball incentive, along with a successful Rice Krispie sale that generated over $130 in profit. They were also conducting two promotional drives for clothing and hygiene products, scheduled to conclude on January 23. Upcoming events included participation in a Black History Museum and a February-long slideshow. The council had also completed an ELF writing contest, resulting in three winners, and initiated a Martin Luther King contest.
The board then turned its attention to routine agenda items, covering curriculum, finance, facilities, personnel, and policy matters. These items were presented, motioned, and unanimously approved without debate. The meeting noted the absence of a finance committee meeting that month but proceeded to approve items related to finance and facilities.
The agenda also included discussions on old business, specifically affirming the HIP determination reports, which received unanimous approval. The board calendar and announcements of upcoming special events were presented, including multiple STEAM nights, a multicultural night, and the GTMS drama club’s performance of “Winnie the Pooh.” A notable event highlighted was the Galloway Township Education Foundation’s “People of the Year” dinner, combined with a retirement dinner, scheduled for May 1st.
Public comment periods were held twice during the meeting, but no residents came forward to speak. The board encouraged public feedback on agenda items.
In closing remarks, board members expressed gratitude for the student council’s efforts, the Rotary Club’s support, and the community’s involvement. They extended New Year wishes and highlighted upcoming events, including a book swap at Arthur Ran and a Soulmate Dance for Smithville families.
