- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Gardner Board of Health, issues were addressed including the ongoing repairs of the city landfill, food safety complaints, and updates on public health initiatives. The meeting, held on March 25th, included discussions on environmental reports, preliminary inspections following a potential foodborne illness report, and the welcoming of a new staff member with an extensive food background.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on the environmental repairs required at the city landfill. Concrete steps for the landfill transfer station were quoted at approximately $3,000, with additional costs for installation and railings. The option of more expensive, safer permanent metal steps that allow for water drainage was also considered. Further, plans were underway to move the attendant station at the transfer station to avoid a perennial spring pool.
The Board also discussed a preliminary inspection conducted in response to a report of potential foodborne illness. Two separate individuals reported illness after eating at a local restaurant at different times. The inspection ensured the restaurant followed proper procedures for restricting sick employees and maintaining hand hygiene. Additionally, the issuance of a food permit for Aldi and the approval of plans for Jersey Mike’s and Anticipated plans for a new coffee shop downtown were noted.
Public health initiatives such as the upcoming wellness fair, a high school health fair, and a food truck festival were mentioned, with the wellness fair having 54 vendors signed up. The Board also touched on the need for improved facilities at the transfer station and the introduction of a new staff member, who would soon be taking over housing complaints alongside existing personnel.
Vaccine clinic schedules were still pending, and a member of the Board planned to take a Title 5 soil evaluator course. The acceptance of new CDC guidelines by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health was acknowledged, which simplifies recommendations for various respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19 and the flu.
