Gardner City Council Debates Proposed Horse Racing Track
- Meeting Overview:
The Gardner City Council recently convened to discuss several matters, with a proposed horse racing track on Green Street emerging as the most prominent topic. The councilors debated the merits and concerns associated with the track, including environmental impacts, traffic, potential revenue, and community agreements. The council decided to hold an informal meeting and public hearing to gather more information and public input on the proposal.
The proposal for a new horse racing track in Gardner has been met with mixed reactions from city council members and the community. During the meeting, concerns were raised about the project’s potential effects on traffic, parking, local revenue, and water protection. The councilors emphasized the importance of informed decision-making and community involvement. As a result, the council agreed to schedule an informal meeting to allow for a presentation on the proposal, as well as a public hearing to ensure that citizens have the opportunity to voice their opinions.
One councilor highlighted the significance of the potential environmental impact on the city’s drinking water and wetlands. Meanwhile, financial considerations were also on the agenda, with discussions revolving around the establishment of a special revenue fund in the host community agreement and the economic benefits that the project might bring.
Amidst the debate on the horse racing track, the meeting also saw the unanimous confirmation of mayoral appointments to the Zoning Board, with Melery Cornette and Lori Weda being recognized for their municipal experience and commended for their service. Additionally, several applications for licenses to deal in secondhand articles were approved.
The council discussed and granted additional time to the Safety Committee to review ordinances amending the city’s parking code. Furthermore, concerns regarding adherence to parliamentary procedures were voiced.
The council acknowledged the start of a new fiscal year and discussed the city’s need to focus on economic development, including attracting new industry, businesses, and residential growth. The growth strategy’s objective is to enhance public services and make the city competitive in retaining talent. Trust in the city’s commissions, boards, and committees to oversee development processes was called for, alongside a plan for financial sustainability.
The meeting also addressed an open meeting law complaint and a communication regarding the Law Department’s representation of City departments. Furthermore, the finance committee was granted more time to finalize their recommendation on an ordinance to amend the city code, while another ordinance concerning sewer rates was moved to final printing.
