Gardner City Council Discusses MART Route Changes and Accessibility Enhancements
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Gardner City Council meeting, members focused on proposed changes to the Montachusett Regional Transit Authority (MART) bus routes, particularly those affecting connectivity and accessibility, alongside broader discussions on enhancing community engagement and participation in local governance.
The council delved into the MART system’s route modifications, which aim to boost efficiency and improve transfer times. One of the notable changes is the extension of bus route three, which services key locations such as Walmart and the hospital. This route will now include additional stops. Improved transfer times between bus routes one and three were also highlighted, allowing smoother transitions and better connectivity for riders.
A significant proposal from the meeting was the establishment of an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) advisory group within MART. This initiative is designed to address the needs of individuals with disabilities. Participants at the meeting were encouraged to share their contact details to join this initiative.
Concerns were raised about the current state of communication and technology within the MART system. Issues with verbal announcements at bus stops, dependent on GPS functionality, were mentioned, with one participant noting the system’s inconsistency, working correctly only “one time out of ten.” This highlighted the need for reliable technology to enhance rider experience.
Adjustments to the MART routes were further discussed, including the elimination of the inner-city service to Leominster. Instead, a new schedule will facilitate transportation to Fitchburg every 30 minutes and from Fitchburg to Worcester every hour. This adjustment is expected to streamline the travel time between Gardner and Worcester to about an hour and a half, although it means not all hospitals will remain accessible on the route as before. The council noted the ongoing survey on MART’s website for public feedback regarding stop changes, primarily affecting the Apple Valley area, and encouraged community participation.
The meeting also addressed the need for bus shelters, especially at Walmart, where passengers are exposed to cold weather while waiting. This issue appears to be part of ongoing negotiations between MART and Walmart, and community members have been encouraged to voice their concerns through the MART survey.
Michael Frank, a transit planner at MART, emphasized the importance of community feedback on route changes, expressing a willingness to adjust service hours and add stops if necessary. Frank advised that complaints should be made via email to avoid overwhelming dispatchers with calls. To support this, participants discussed updating the city website with pertinent contact information for MART.
Beyond transportation matters, the meeting touched on various community events and initiatives, including the upcoming Greater Gardner National Night Out scheduled for August 6th. Council members planned to coordinate efforts for this event, discussing themed raffle baskets and their availability to assist with organization.
In the realm of city administration, updates included the imminent departure of a clerk, with interviews for a replacement underway. Discussions also covered a recent school committee meeting where a dispute arose over bench relocation, focusing on accessibility and seating arrangements. Additionally, a solar evaluation transition plan was mentioned, exploring potential funding opportunities and their implications for future grant applications.
The council addressed water issues at two schools, noting a lack of city representation at a related hearing, and discussed accessibility concerns about a specific building, with referrals made to Gardner Fire for resolving local complaints.
Finally, the ongoing development of a dog park was discussed, with emphasis on improving accessibility in terms of walkways and equipment placement. The council aimed to create a welcoming environment for all users.
