Gardner Conservation Commission Approves Beach Sand Replenishment Amidst Discussions on Nature Trail Barriers
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Gardner Conservation Commission meeting, the primary focus was the approval of a sand replenishment project at Kendall Pond East, alongside ongoing discussions about implementing barriers to prevent unauthorized vehicle access to a local nature trail. The meeting addressed several other procedural matters, but these topics garnered the most attention.
The Commission approved a project proposed by Francis McFall to refresh an existing beach area on Kendall Pond East. The plan involves adding an additional inch and a half to two inches of sand over a 15 by 25-foot area, with erosion control measures such as waddles to be placed along the water’s edge. These waddles will remain until spring to ensure stability over the winter months. During the discussion, Commission members emphasized the importance of verifying the source of the sand to prevent contamination, with McFall confirming the sand would come from a reputable local supplier.
In another discussion, the Commission explored options for installing barriers at the end of a nature trail to prevent vehicle access. Inspired by a recent visit to a trail in Pennsylvania, a member shared photographs of potential gate designs that allow pedestrian and bicycle access while blocking cars. The Commission considered collaborating with the Department of Public Works to either build or install such barriers, depending on cost and feasibility. Additionally, they discussed the possibility of using private contractors to construct the gates if the department could handle the installation.
The meeting also included procedural continuances for projects at Dunn State Park and 42 Linus A., both deferred to October 27th, as well as updates on ongoing efforts to improve the department’s standard operating procedures for site visits. These efforts aim to enhance the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the agent’s reports.
