- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Gardner Council on Aging, the board tackled a range of issues, from a budget shortfall in the clerk’s account to the looming threat of senior-targeted fraud and scams. The meeting revealed concerns over financial discrepancies and the need for cybersecurity awareness among the senior community. Furthermore, the council discussed extensive repairs to Waterfield Street, proposed salary adjustments, and the importance of maintaining financial health through grants and careful budget planning.
The financial health of the Council on Aging was a primary focus, with a shortfall in the clerk’s account due to an increase in the outreach coordinator’s contract. To address this, funds were reallocated from the FY 23 Grant, which is nearing depletion, to the FY 24 State Grant. Efforts were made to balance the books with the help of the auditor and to keep the revolving fund around $40,000. No expenses had been incurred for the FY 25 budget yet. The council also noted purchases made for the organization, including Chromebooks and meeting owls.
Another major topic was the status of Waterford Street, which requires substantial renovations estimated to cost between $900,000 and $2 million. The council discussed engaging a firm for contract documents and the bidding process, with a potential construction start date of August 1st. The biggest construction task would involve redoing the bathrooms and installing ventilated split heat units. Additionally, there was a change in leadership with the appointment of a new director.
The council expressed positive sentiments about the board’s engagement and their work at the Council on Aging. Upcoming community events such as a picnic barbecue, yoga classes, and concerts were highlighted. The council also showed appreciation to various department heads and individuals for their contributions to the community.
A significant concern addressed was the vulnerability of seniors to fraud and scams, particularly through social media. The Council stressed the importance of educating the elder community and providing resources to help protect their personal information. Initiatives included a partnership with the local theater to promote Senior Center services and a discussion about the senior shuttle service.
