- Meeting Overview:
The Gardner License Commission convened on May 14, 2024, to deliberate on several license requests, with one notable issue being the Lithuanian Club’s seasonal liquor license. The club’s representatives were present to address the Commission’s concerns regarding outstanding inspection items that the club had yet to resolve. The Commission’s decision to withhold immediate approval highlighted the importance of meeting safety standards for public establishments.
The Lithuanian Club’s predicament took center stage during the meeting, as they sought to secure a seasonal liquor license in time for an upcoming event. The representatives reported they had installed CO2 detectors and corrected the visibility of building numbers to comply with previous inspection findings. Nevertheless, they were still awaiting the installation of crucial fire alarm system components and a push bar to replace an illegal deadbolt. The Commission emphasized the importance of these safety measures, which sparked a debate about the timeline and necessity of the remaining inspection items. The club representatives expressed urgency for the license, citing the impending event and the need for fire department approval. The Commission did not grant the seasonal liquor license but recommended further dialogue with the club to expedite compliance.
The meeting also saw approval for several one-day license requests. These included licenses for the third annual Mini Car Show and Truck Festival scheduled for June 9th, which is anticipated to draw around 800 attendees with proceeds benefiting local veterans and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Additionally, Mackie Lumber’s 75th-anniversary celebration set for June 13th was approved for a one-day license. The event organizers assured the commission of security measures, expecting around 600 guests. Furthermore, the commission sanctioned a one-day license for Fitness Concepts’ Cheese Run event on May 18th, with around 250 participants and volunteers along the route.
Other items discussed without further debate included the seasonal all alcoholic beverages license review for the Gardner Ale House and the approval of outdoor entertainment for the Gardner Ale House and the Moon Hill Brewing Company. The renewal of an all alcoholic beverages license for the Gardner Elks Lodge and their outdoor entertainment approval were also addressed.
Earlier, the commission grappled with safety issues related to the installation of smoke detectors, bathroom vent fans, and door closers in a building. Members debated granting a temporary permit for outdoor operation only until an occupancy issue was resolved. There was also uncertainty about issuing a one-day license for outdoor activities to premises already holding a seasonal or annual license. Additionally, the commission mentioned an application for a lodging house license, raising questions about whether further discussion would be necessary before issuance.
