Gardner School Committee Celebrates Record Scholarship Awards and Early College Success
- Meeting Overview:
The Gardner School Committee meeting on January 7, 2025, featured notable achievements including a record number of John and Abigail Adams scholarship recipients and success in the Early College program, alongside discussions on school improvement, student engagement, and infrastructure projects.
In a highlight moment, Superintendent Mark Pellegrino proudly recognized the record-setting achievements of Gardner’s students in the John and Abigail Adams scholarship program. With 47 high school students and six from Gardner Academy receiving this prestigious scholarship, the district marked a milestone. Superintendent Pellegrino emphasized the financial relief these scholarships provide to students as they prepare for college, particularly in the context of optional MCAS testing.
Attention then turned to the Early College program, which reported a retention rate of 95% for the first semester. This program, now boasting 90 enrolled students, has seen remarkable success, particularly among historically underrepresented groups, including those with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). The program’s retention figures were a point of pride, especially considering the challenges faced in the previous year. Improvements in curriculum alignment, notably in mathematics, have been pivotal in achieving these outcomes. The collaborative efforts with local higher education institutions have been instrumental, contributing to the positive feedback from students participating in vocational programs like plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work. Plans to expand the plumbing program next year were also shared, reflecting ongoing efforts to broaden vocational opportunities for students.
The meeting also addressed the Gardner Middle School’s feasibility study for a new roof project. The School Committee expressed its support for the project, a necessary step to facilitate the city’s council’s decision-making process regarding funding. Director Hawk outlined the process of securing support from the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). Although the specifics of the funding amount remain undetermined, the committee’s endorsement highlighted the importance of collaboration among school officials, city council members, and the community to address both immediate educational needs and long-term infrastructure improvements.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to educational initiatives aimed at improving student attendance and engagement. The committee discussed the strategic shift from a trimester to a semester system, designed to enhance credit recovery opportunities. This change allows students to earn credits at the end of each semester, providing a more manageable path for those facing academic challenges. The introduction of the MVP program aims to guide students in planning their post-high school paths, encouraging them to explore early college options or consider a return to Gardner High School. Classroom routines and restorative discipline practices were emphasized as essential components in fostering a supportive learning environment.
The committee also focused on strengthening family and community involvement, highlighting increased participation during school events and the potential for a more active parent organization. Community partnerships have been expanded, with local organizations offering resources and support within the schools. Initiatives such as health classes by local health agencies and peer mentoring from the Department of Mental Health have enhanced student access to essential services.
In terms of leadership, the School Committee elected Rachel Cormier as Vice Chair and John LaFreniere as Finance Officer, with both receiving unanimous support.
Members shared personal reflections. This focus on mental health aligns with broader efforts to create an inclusive and supportive educational environment.
