Glassboro Council Approves Ordinance to Limit Business Hours Amid Public Safety Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Glassboro Borough Council approved an ordinance amending the hours of operation for retail sales and service businesses in the central business district, requiring them to close between midnight and 5:00 a.m. This measure aims to address public health and safety issues, including large gatherings and nuisance crimes, that have been troubling the area. Other topics discussed included several new business proposals and ongoing construction projects.
The newly approved ordinance is part of a broader effort by Glassboro’s administration to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors. Council members explained that the ordinance targets businesses in the central business district to mitigate the issues arising from late-night crowds. These gatherings have posed significant burdens on local police and fire departments, as well as affected residents. The ordinance is designed to encourage dispersal of these groups at a reasonable hour, thereby reducing the strain on public services.
In other business, the council approved several purchases for the police department, including a 2026 Chevy Tahoe and two police interceptor utility vehicles, procured through cooperative purchasing programs. Additionally, they authorized a street closure for a block party in August and discussed bids for borough building alarm services.
The engineering report provided updates on various construction projects, including ongoing work at Camelot Phase Three townhouses, Vision Stream Apartments, and high street townhouses. The report noted that paving is scheduled for several streets, with detours expected, and work on Hampton Boulevard is set to begin mid-June.
The council also passed a series of resolutions under the consent agenda, covering the purchase of equipment for the highway and parks departments, renewal of alcoholic beverage licenses, and a redevelopment agreement for Glass Works Urban Renewal LLC. One resolution urged state leaders to implement reforms to manage rising health benefit premiums for public sector employees.
