Glassboro Residents Demand Action on Snow Removal and Road Safety
- Meeting Overview:
In the recent Glassboro Borough Council meeting, residents voiced their concerns about the safety of children walking to school due to uncleared sidewalks after a significant snowstorm, alongside issues of traffic safety at a local intersection. The council committed to reviewing snow removal ordinances and working on traffic safety measures.
One notable issue discussed during the meeting was the aftermath of a recent snowstorm that left sidewalks uncleared, posing hazards for schoolchildren, particularly in a partial walking district. A resident, Sher Siner, highlighted the danger for children who were forced to walk on busy streets due to uncleared sidewalks on Main Street. Siner emphasized the borough’s responsibility to ensure the safety of its residents, especially schoolchildren, and recommended revising the existing ordinance, which allows five days to clear sidewalks after a snowfall of 10 inches, to a more immediate timeline. She noted that her family and some neighbors had promptly cleared their walkways, contrasting this with others who did not comply. This issue prompted the council to consider amending the ordinance to address these safety concerns.
Further discussions on public safety were sparked by another resident who brought up the intersection of Donald Barger Boulevard and Main Street. The resident expressed concern over frequent traffic light violations at this intersection, which had recently been the site of a serious car accident. They commended the quick response of first responders but stressed the need for preventive measures to enhance safety, especially since the intersection is heavily traversed by students.
The meeting also touched on the borough’s response to snow removal, with Council President Anna Miller and other council members commending the efforts of the highway, water and sewer, police, and fire departments in clearing snow and maintaining accessibility. Linda Galashaw, another resident, noted the difficulties in mail delivery due to snow accumulation and suggested that the borough collaborate with the county for additional snow removal resources.
Budgetary concerns were also on the agenda, with discussions centering on a potential deficit due to health benefit costs. The council outlined a shift to a high deductible health plan that has reduced the borough’s healthcare contributions, but a minor tax increase of two to three cents was anticipated to address budgetary needs. This tax increase is attributed to ongoing development expected to bring in additional revenue.
The borough’s approach to new business developments, including fast food establishments and marijuana dispensaries, was another significant topic. Concerns were raised about the perceived saturation of these businesses, with calls for more diverse dining options. The council clarified that the borough is limited to two marijuana dispensaries and emphasized the thorough vetting process for new fast food establishments. They also addressed concerns about the impact of new housing developments, particularly the balance between rental properties and homeownership, which is seen as crucial for attracting families and fostering a stable community.
The meeting also included a discussion on the recognition of Black History Month and efforts to engage the community, particularly young people, in understanding Black history. The council acknowledged the need for greater visibility and support for such initiatives in the future.
